I must say, I quite liked Mellenfral's flag. It doesn't even really go against the principles if you think about it:

×Mellenfral would definitely appreciate that flag, as it represents everything they stand for.
One cannot mistake the official seal of Mellenfral for any other entity.
The brush, ruler, and pencil, and most of all the equilateral triangle, are recognizable from a fair distance.
Even without the text, that same brush, ruler, and pencil would carry the idea that "hey, these guys like the arts and sciences" excellently. So does the fact that there are words at all.
The seal is in the center, and a well-balanced seal.
Yellow on blue is surely tolerable, as are black on blue and black on yellow. So the closest this flag comes to being too low-contrast is the three implements.
And nobody ever said you can't have words, just that you had to be careful. Of course, I may be biased because I live in Washington.
