Dear DROD Friends,

I have taken upon me the task of hosting the 2018 Deadlies. In this post, I will sort all 2018 holds into their correct award categories and collect nominations for Best Community Contributor.

Although I did play a fair number of all 2018 holds, I haven’t played all of them and I definitely need a bit of help (questions in red) to sort things out. In particular with all RPG-related things.

I will keep this top post updated to reflect the latest developments. Within the next one or two weeks, all nominations should be as complete as they will get and I’ll set up the polling business.

What do you mean: ‘2018 Deadlies’
You don’t know about the Deadlies? Let me explain.

The DROD forum has this nice tradition, where we collectively sing praise to all architects striving to design the most nifty and awesome holds for the players’ community. For some reason unknown to me (but probably known to the more senior forum folk), this annual Celebration goes by the name of ‘Deadlies’.

And now I’m hosting the award. No grand stage, live broadcasting or world-class musical acts, but an award nonetheless. You’ve got to start somewhere.

The entries for 2018
All holds that have been published in 2018 are eligible for praise & honour in this years’ Deadlies.
I would suggest that collaborative holds are just listed like normal holds and the compiler will receive any credits where applicable. I am confident that said compiler will be willing to share her/his joy with the other contributors in the event of a win in one of the categories.

DROD holds from 2018 in chronological order
* Combined Hazards – Dying Flutchman – 7.5 brains
* BRAINLORD 2018 – Xindaris – 4.5 brains

Categories
Below is a list of award categories with all eligible entries for that award. I am just listing all holds that could be sensibly placed into these categories. No quality selection from my side is implied. If you fin that I missed some entries, disagree about my selection or have any other remarks, I’d be very happy if you would share your thoughts below. I’m also available for PM.

Consider checking the layout of the holds using the map tool

5) Technical Design Excellence in Concept
All holds go here.
Collaboration entries will be listed separately where this makes sense.
Nuntar has provided a nice explanation below:

6) Creative Design Excellence in Storyline

Thanks for getting this started, DF! For now I'd just like to note that the BSL computer character's name is "CuBEOS". It never says its name in-hold but the character that does the talking is called that, it's "canonically" named that, and it is mentioned in the hold description at least.

I've looked through the entries as best I can. I may not have gotten everything (especially if you missed anything for Custom Element or Voice Acting) since I haven't played all the holds myself.

Paycheck was released in 2008, not 2018.

Ghosts from Ghostsmiters: Prequel are not eligible, since they previously appeared in Ghostsmiters.

DROD Online is eligible for the "Modification or Addition" award, and might be the only entrant (in which case it would win without a vote).

The Scripting award is intended to honour scripting that's separate from custom elements, e.g. cutscene scripting. It does feel like, more often than not, there's nothing really outstanding for this award. Maybe it's time to drop it.

The Concept award honours holds that have an awesome overarching concept for the hold, e.g. last year's joint winners were Roaches and Walls (the hold uses only the most basic game elements) and This and That (two linked holds with a unique metapuzzle).

Maybe contest compilations shouldn't be eligible for Storyline? It wouldn't seem right to me if I won this award for Twelve Days of Christmas, for example, when any storyline elements present were contributed by the competitors, not me.

None of the RPG holds are by new architects. Trickster is a new architect with Tinytall Tower (her previous published hold was a compilation), so she wins without a vote.

bomber50 is eligible for the Lifetime Award. The other RPG architects are not: komachi has only 4 holds and one (Palace of the travel) is below a 7 rating; kieranmillar won last year; Someone Else hasn't released a solo hold this year.

Let's Player: Chaco, mauvebutterfly, ThemsAllTook, Xindaris (you can take all the links from last year's topic).

As far as scripting that doesn't use custom elements, I guess the hub of The Untold Tales of Gunthro Budkin might count? I guess anything with dialogue in it would technically count as scripting, as would non-stairs room transitions. For that matter, implementing challenges could also possibly qualify.

Admittedly most of these things fall outside of what the award was intended to count for. I agree that there isn't usually much to vote on here. The main reason to leave this as a separate category would be to avoid having a custom element beat out every other scripting consideration every year, since I'm pretty sure that custom elements will get more attention than other scripting.

The postmastery area of Blind Race #5 has a minigame by disoriented. To me that feels like it fits more under the "Scripting" category than the "Custom Element" one.

Nice work! I was under the impression that all holds are eligible for the storyline category though?

I have tried to only list holds that actually have a storyline, in addition to the level entry texts and the like.

However, if be happy to include all holds. Any other members with an opinion on this matter?

It's probably easier to just include all holds under story rather than debating each one of them to see if they have enough story to count. Especially since we won't all agree on how much story would count as having a story.

One more correction: disoriented played Beethro in BSL, not Insoluble. He briefly volunteered to try, but diso is the one who ultimately did it.

At the top of the forum click downloads, then scroll to the bottom of the page it leads to and click holds. That will provide you with a real chronological list of hold releases for regular and RPG. Might want to double check your list against this one.

I am pretty confident that we have now covered all categories.

I intend to start the poll after the coming weekend.

If you have any more corrections or suggestions, please make sureto respond before Monday.

Thnx

Let's add some RPG goodness to the voting list!

From the 2018 Year of RPG Contest:

Scripting:
Restocking shop (The Hostile Hotel by Nuntar)
Backpack script (The Heist by kieranmillar)
Ether (In Your Atmosphere by LuckyLuc)

Custom Elements:
x2 (Exponentiate! by Xindaris)
Attack and Defense Amplifiers (Amplified Arena by Hyperme)

I think that's everything that qualifies from the contest, although some arguments could probably be made for some other things there too.

I have played Throw and Goblin Hollow and don't remember there being any special scripting or custom elements there.

Has anyone played through Royal Rescue or Great place? And remember if there is anything there that should be a candidate for one of the DRODscript categories?

Also, Kieranmillar's RPG hold "Goblin King's Fortress" is missing from the list of holds, but I don't remember there being any special scripting there.

I would also like to request that the hub from Untold Tales of Gunthro Budkin be removed from the scripting category as the scripting used there was extremely minimal. I was mentioning it as an example of non-custom-element scripting. That hold does kind of have a coherent story though since I tried to incorporate all the entries into the theme of the contest, so it might be eligible for the story category despite being a contest compilation. That makes more sense than listing the individual entries in the case of this hold, anyway. I'm only mentioning this since you seemed to suggest you'd be putting contest entries separately for the storyline vote which may still be better for some of the other compilations but not for this one.

The thing in "Exponentiate!" is literally called "x2" inside the hold proper. I'm not picky what people choose to call it though.
