Open Hexagon - version 1.8 (online update)

Open Hexagon is my first completed game.
It's a fast paced fun clone of Super Hexagon (by Terry Canavagh).

The goal of the game is to survive as long as possible, by avoiding the walls closing in towards the center.
You are the little triangle, and can rotate by using the left/right arrow keys.

The soundtrack is made by BOSSFIGHT.

The game is completely customizable: you can create and share levels/patterns/styles/music.
Everything can be modified and created with your favorite text editor, thanks to the simple JSON language.
Create patterns and customize even more with LUA scripting!

Since 1.8, you can now compete online for the top high scores!

Version 1.8 is now available!

I'm having problems... I tried running the program in fullscreen, and I heard an electronic voice say something, but all I could see was a black screen. So I tried windowed mode. I pressed enter and stuff happened... there was music and a timer in the top left corner, but nothing else, so I can't see what's going on. The playing area doesn't seem to be drawing. It's very strange.

It's a driver problem. The game works properly with any modern hardware. If you have an older video card or older drivers you may get some issues.

You could try updating your video card drivers.

You really should mention that you can use the SHIFT button for precise turning.

All in all a nice little adrenaline-packed game.

After reading some comments about it in other indie blogs, I just wanted to say that I'm so glad you have learned something important out of it.

(Which reminds me that I really need to finish mine before someone starts writing a "tribute". :))

I will definitely play the game when I have more time, and I even haven't played the original yet.

Well Done!

"Inspired." I see. Goes a bit further than that, seemingly, but I guess that's been covered on the blogz.

So. Congratulations on getting through a programming project, I guess, but perhaps for your next project you might consider doing something of your own?

I've covered my motives and my mistakes in these comments pretty extensively. I suggest you read them to understand why I made Open Hexagon, and what I could've done more correctly

Oh, I did read them. And what you could've done more correctly is all of it. Presumably you've already figured that out, but what's done is done.

on the one hand this is a fantastic chance to make fun of SuperV and I really missed the boat on that so many times while he was new here

on the other hand if I do that I'm supporting the ludicrous idea that open source versions of games is cool AS LONG AS we're only ripping off big corporations and not indie developers

anyway you did the game better than Cavanagh did the /actual/ game, and you're not even charging for it, this would have been trumpeted as a success for the common indie developer had you not ticked off some guy (I KNOW HE POSTS HERE don't think i don't) who happens to not be rich and had instead done it to EA or Activision.

The source code itself wasn't ripped off, and it's not like we're making a clone of a ground-breaking game like Katamari Damacy here.

Holy potatoes, calm down, kids.

I'd like to thank everyone for the feedback.

Version 1.2 is now available!

Watch the update video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRVVzf2EeMs

Read the README here:
http://wrttn.in/c7059c

This major update completely changes the level creation system - you can now use LUA scripting to create your own patterns, or create JSON events to make every level unique and to interact with the player.

Change any parameter during gameplay, surprise the player with traps or original level segments, turn your crazy pattern ideas into reality. The possibilities, thanks to the two scripting engines, are endless.

Player profiles were also added in the game - save your scores on your profile, and let other users create their own! And more importantly, prevent score data loss after updating the game.

And for those who prefer enjoying the game as it is - all the original levels have been updated with new patterns and scripting! There is also a new default level, with a completely new song.

You can download Open Hexagon v1.2 on the official page:
http://www.facebook.com/OpenHexagon

(The official page is also a nice place to send feedback, and share your own creations!)

Okay, I have no problem with you making this game or it's inspirations but making people go through Facebook to download is morally indefensible. Worse than these new-fangled ad links even.

You don't have to like the page!
It was just a convenient way to make sure all the links are updated - if it bothers people I'll spend the time updating them manually, though.

I like the idea that using facebook is 'morally indefensible' now

I remember when we used that term for things like, I don't know, murder.

We don't any longer? And I think that there is still room for gradations of seriousness in "morally indefensible". Requiring people to give up some privacy when you don't have to require that is on the low end of the scale, but probably still on there.

Necrobump! But...

Mathias Thomsen, an awesome Open Hexagon fan, is running a 24 hour charity marathon stream: http://www.twitch.tv/ayumiyu

It would mean a lot for me if you could check it out and consider donating to charity! :)
