I just think that mathematical proofs, have to in some way be connected to reality. I then think about chemistry where there is at a point discrete distances. The arguments center around the orbitals of electrons. When you get close enough, electrons jump from one orbital to the other without crossing the space in between. (and n can equal zero, but that doesn't apply) I think that this should cross over to math as well and thats why I think that this breaks some rule that we haven't thought of yet.

I heard this funny joke relating to this.(sort of)

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar.

The first one goes to the bartender and asks for a beer.

So the bartender pours him a beer.

The second mathematician asks for half a beer.

So the bartender pours him half a beer.

The third mathematician asks for a quarter of a beer.

So the bartender pours him a quarter of a beer.

And before the forth mathematician opens his mouth the bartender says, "I hate you all," and pours two beers.

The thing is, he SHOULD have poured 1/4 of a beer at that point if he was going to make them split it themselves.

I think that this should cross over to math as well

Why? Math is a mental construct that's useful in describing the physical world. There is no such thing as a physical 3, for instance, only our representation of a quantity. Why should physical rules apply to it?

Math is a theory that can be APPLIED, and often is. Word problems make sure you know how to apply what you have learned. See, there's your connection with the real world.

REAL mathematicians don't delve into the realm of applicable math. O:-

Real mathematicians don't exist. They're a theoretical concept.

No...there are plenty of real mathematicians. It's just that so many of them are irrational. :P

Well obviously they're irrational, have you ever tried turning a mathematician into a fraction? They sure aren't too willing to help.

Just a joke I heard not so long ago.

Pï and I are walking around together. Suddenly I says to Pi: "Get Rational",
Then Pi reacts and says to I: "Get Real!!!".

Fine, if you want math humour... (no these are not mine, they're found on the internet)

The integral of zee-squared dee zee,
From 1 to the cube root of 3,
Times the cosine,
Of 3 pi over 9,
Is the log of the cube root of e
-----
The result when you add one to e
raised to the power of three
point one four one five
nine two times i
is zero (approximately)
-----
A dozen, a gross, and a score
plus three times the square root of four
divided by seven
plus five times eleven
is nine squared, and not a bit more!
-----
The integral sec y dy
From zero to one-sixth of pi
Is the log to base e
Of the square root of three
Times the sixty-fourth power of i

Here's some math humor I've encountered.

1) If you have friends who are taking a course in topology, you can amuse them easily. Punch three holes in a piece of paper with a pencil and write "I took a course in topology and all I got was this lousy T-shirt!" on it.

2) Q: What is the difference between a scalar and a matrix with a single element?
A: You can't multiply arbitrary matrices with the latter.

I'm not sure why 2) is funny. People told me it is. But I was being serious when I pointed it out to them. :fun

I have a comic strip with some math humor in which two female numbers are checking out a male 3 and 9, and one of them says "that three guy is prime, but nine is a perfect square."
