I noticed something about the soundtracks in DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold.

In Journey to Rooted Hold, Emmett Plant did the soundtracks, but when the City Beneath rolled out or DROD 3.0. Travelogue did the soundtracks, but here's the elephant in the room;

In DROD 3.0, the Journey to Rooted Hold soundtracks were gone, which carried on to 4.0. Meanwhile, DROD RPG had the JTRH soundtracks, and so on. DROD 5.0 recovered the soundtracks.

So what's the elephant in the room here? Why did the JTRH soundtracks have to be taken out in DROD 3 and 4, but then they were recovered in DROD 5?

I'm not in the know, but the first thought* I have is that in such situations it's either the copyright situation, or royalties
Sometimes, the problems are resolved after a while

From what I understand, the earlier holds in the series didn't properly show their endings if they were played in later engines, but 5.0 restored that functionality. So adding the music may have just been part of a general desire for better backwards compatibility that hadn't been as much of a focus earlier.

Of course, that's just speculation on my part.

Yeah, no elephant in the room. We had rights for the tracks, because the KDD/JtRH tracks (aka the DMOD OST) were Erik's. Emmett only produced the title screen track for JtRH.

I don't recall that the JtRH room style tracks weren't included in the 3.x and 4.x full engine installs. I thought they had been maintained. Are we talking about the demo installers here? Those would have only contained music for a single core room style that's included in the demo installer.

Great, now that we have this out of our systems
I have a question - any unreleased music, waiting to be heard, out there?:)

The JtRH tracks definitely weren't included in 3.x and 4.x. In fact, Stefan made a tool so people could extract the music from 2.x and use it in later versions. My understanding of the situation, which I'm sure is incomplete, is that Emmett Plant was hired to write music for JtRH and even posted some samples on the forum, but ultimately had to back out and only completed the title screen track, so Erik decided to polish up some of his own music and use that instead. Jon Sonnenberg was hired to provide new music for TCB, but I'm not sure why Erik's music was removed.

I appreciate you keeping me honest.

Hrm...interesting. Oh, the convoluted paths we excavate through reality.

I'm glad we have all the music together again in 5.x.

Speaking of Music, considering earlier posts (TopicIDs 31209, 41895, 45133), and considering that there are already video playthroughs of the game that feature the game's music, being posted on YouTube,

Is it still allowable to post DROD's soundtrack music (at least those that feature in the game playthroughs, from JtRH to TSS) on YouTube or other video sharing sites, for sharing under Creative Commons?

Or must permission still be sought first?

I appreciate you asking about this.

Yes, I'd like to request asking permission before publishing parts or all of the soundtrack for distribution.

To refresh my memory, has the DROD music ever been released for re-distribution in this way under Creative Commons? I don't recall any particular designation like that.

Though I could be wrong, I don't recall it was ever allowable to post DROD's soundtrack music on Youtube or other sharing sites. What am I missing?
