I'd like to be able to check a box and always see the grid lines or press 'g' and see the grid lines even over non-gridded backgrounds. The grid would also show up over wall areas. I know that this will "mar" some graphics, but as a player option, it would make many rooms less tedious (and I think that should trump the look and feel of the game in this case). If you want to admire the graphics, then you can turn the grid off.

And probably simple to implement.
If they do, though, I think the lines should be something other than red (that's taken by sight lines and such), and should be under the creature layer and above the tar layer....

This seems more important now as architects enjoy using floors that do not have a grid pattern.

It is a very good idea. Even if you're just using the "road" or "dirt floor" graphics built in, and not custom user graphics.

Also, some kind of numbered rulers along the border of the grid while it is visible so you can find a row or column without having to right-click wildly around the playfield would be handy...

If I might make a suggestion? Make them from a colour that no major that touches the edges of the squares uses. e.g. definitely not blue (as that's orthosquare territory). Might I suggest some shade of purple? A few monsters might use it (e.g. aumtlich), but otherwise it would stand out quite well.

Failing that, draw it with one-pixel wide lines with a black border around them, kinda like the text in the menus is done now - that should work with just about anything.

Bonus points for making the grid lines dashed or dotted to be less intrusive.
