EDIT: The contest is ended

OK, once more there is a Limited Space contest. This one with harsher rules to encourage creativity. You might like it, you might hate it.

Once again, make the best hold you can using the room provided under the following rules.

1) You must only use elements from DROD: AE. Thus, the legal things are, I believe...

Walls, crumbly walls, arrows, tar, tar mothers, roaches, roach queens, wraithwings, serpents, brains, goblins, spiders, evil eyes, orbs, doors, trapdoors, red doors, green doors, pits, mimic/invis potions, scrolls and checkpoints.

Please note that layering issues may apply - e.g. potions can not be put atop force arrows in AE, but they can in JtRH and TCB. To clarify, the room you make must be able to work in DROD: AE.

2) You may not remove any element that is already there. This means all the walls and pits currently in the room must *stay* in the room, unchanged. No replacing them with crumblies, or adding obstacles or arrows on them.
3) You may not place any element over a pre-placed one (floor excepted of course)
4) The winner will be decided by a poll after the contest.
5) Each participant may enter a maximum of two holds
6) No custom images
7) No scripting or NPCs of any kind.
8) The room must be solvable.
9) You may change Beethro's initial position and orientation
10) The contest will finish in a week and the entries will become a compilation
11) No-one is allowed to include a potato, artichoke or any other vegetable, except possibly in the hold title if special dispensation is given for reasons of state.

The prize for this contest will be a custom avatar done to your specifications (either for the board or for your hold), of a similar style to those I've done previously - see behind the cut for two sample ones I've created. Re: Limited space II, I'll compile and post the entries during the week

Should anyone else wish to donate a prize (other than modpoints), please post :) I thought it nice to have a prize besides them.

Can we use cosmetic things from JTRH and TCB? (this includes platforms that cannot move, brides that cannot fall, pressure plates that do nothing, etc.)
If not, do we have to submit it in an AE style?

Also, can we script a 'neather-like character? I know that the 'neather was hardcoded, but I really don't want to make a patch to put his in. (not saying that I will actually do this)

One more thing I thought of:
Do layer issues count? ie tar, potions or scrolls and force arrows.

OK: Just leave the cosmetic things out - easier to judge that way. AE stuff only.

:P No scripted characters at all, not even neatherlike.

Regarding layering issues... you make an excellent point. However, for the purposes of this contest - they shall be upheld. No layering potions on top of arrows - the hold must be able to work in DROD: AE, even if you didn't make it in AE. (i.e. you could copy the room across brick for brick and it would work)

Can we require that backspace cannot be used?
And for that matter, no clicking on orbs either? :P

:P I'm not going to be quite that harsh. If it's an AE hold it can still be imported into TCB, where one could click on the orbs anyway :P

Basically, just make the hold so it can be used in AE if needed.

Not really... the room contains a sister gate which can't be reproduced in AE.

But, I agree. I also tried importing it in AE first. It would make a lot of sense and ensure that all created entries use old elements only.

Actually, it's not a sister gate. It's a normal green gate but because there's no monsters in the room it opens immediately, and thus looks like a sister gate.

I have redone the room in DROD: AE, so you should be able to import it directly into AE to work there. The file at the top will be updated momentarily.

Not a problem. I really should have done it in AE to begin with. My stupidity. I just hope we get lots of entrants, the prize is at least different :)

Not at all, I just wanted the original to be in AE so any version can use it. Please remember the layering rules.

I'm sorry techant - that one's not legal. It uses mud, golems and tar gates none of which are in AE.

I was thinking AE was JtRH sorry I'll fix it. :blush

:? Am I just seeing things or did you change the layout from the original? There are 3 empty spaces above the pit on the right side now when there were only 2 before.

I have attached the original but it is off from the new AE version. 'SomeoneElse' used the old version so which one to use is the question. I think the old is the right one and I will use it but maybe others have the new. :~(

:weep Read my question above. You used the older version of the hold template, right. I could tell because you only had 2 spaces above the pits on the right side. Down load the new and see the difference. I don't know which is right now?

Otherwise it looked great to me can't wait to play it. :fun

Ahhh, I do see the difference now. Everything is shifted down one space as well, although that difference really doesn't matter.

Someone Else's hold would also need to be changed if we use the updated room, where as changing calamarain's to fit with the original would have no affect on his hold at all.

I guess I'll just wait for official word before changing my entry.

I must apologise again (I seem to be doing that a lot on the contest threads). This contest definitely is definitely having problems due to my mistakes. My only excuse (and yes, I know it's an excuse not a reason) was that I estimate I'd been awake for nearly 27 hours when I tried to sort out the new one.

Apparently the new one is slightly different. Please keep using the new one.

If Someone else wants to change his hold to fit with the new one that's fine, but because it was my mistake not his, I'll still consider his entry legal.

Urgh. Not having a good day.

Actually the only real difference is that the wall is 2 spaces higher, you can match the original by adding 2 walls in thoses squares which I thinks is within the rules. So that is really all SomeoneElse's hold has done, plus the other wall adjustments that were made. I was just wondering about the green door place over the original pit area.

Neat room, but it says it was created by: 3.141692653589793238462643383, which is almost pi, but off by one number. The real pi is listed below.

3.141592653589793238462643383

Unless of course you were really trying to make a clever joke about something being just off from the original, like a certain contest... in which case, well played.
