Alright, so I just thought of this.

Why not use the surroundings of the speaker in the avatar? It would be used whenever a monster speaks.

EX:

A roach next to two eyes speaks. In the avatar, we see the roach, the eves and other stuff that are close to it. As the roach moves while it speaks, the avatar will change to show the new surroundings of the roach.

Nice idea. Easy to implement? No. No, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, well, you get the picture.

You would have to draw millions of different combinations, and let me tell you, it's not easy.

Sure it's easy to implement - just copy the game area around the speaking NPC into the avatar frame, and hey presto - instant custom avatar! :D

np: Fluke - Squirt (Risotto)

Who says you have to draw a new image for every possibility? Just draw one image per element, slightly smaller then the frame, write a line of code that finds out what objects are next to the creature and put their partial pictures into the same frame.

I am opposed to this because I would rather see Dr. Imer's time used more constructively. Like for fixing player roles, or finishing the 3.1 patch.

It's not worth the time to implement. I've been looking through the source code in a hopeless attempt to teach myself how to use images in C++ programming, and looking at the code I can tell you: A little thing takes a lot of work.

And, quite frankly, this isn't that little to begin with.

Well, yeah, it serves no use. I never thought it would be implemented, mainly because it wouldn't look good.

Isn't the problem specifically that he won't get the picture? :-)
