Rowling drops in off-hand references a lot, which is one of the things I like about her writing: she's very good at hiding clues.

Go back and look for Rita Skeeter's unauthorised transformations in the fourth book; they're very well-hidden, even when you know what you're looking for.

he didn't have the sorting hat with him, you have to pull it out of the sorting hat.

At the end of his comment, silver was referring to Harry, who didn't have the sorting cap.

I finished DH last night. Awesome! All the break-in and break-out scenes were action packed -- I really like reading page-turners like this. All in all, I've enjoyed Rowling's innovative take on the various mythology throughout the series.

I had reread through the prior six books preparatory to reading this one, and everything did flow really well throughout. A series/serial with a preconceived master plot definitely seems like the way to go in drumming up a snowballing fanbase (current example -- HL2: Episodes 1-3). Possibly the only way to end up with a Work for the Ages, and much better than just tacking on ad-hoc stuff in each part of an interminable saga as you go along (e.g. Artemis Fowl?). Yet another tiny instance of master preconception in HP: in each of the first two books, mention was made about how Harry felt Snape could read his mind when Snape looked at him.

Yeah...I feel bad that Griphook lost his sword again. Kind of.

Loose ends?
* are the goblins going to go after Harry and co. later for breaking into Gringotts on principle?
* who finds the Stone later?
* strange how (consciously, I think) no mention was made of how Mad Eye's eye can penetrate the cloak in #7. Will someone retrieve that eye later?

I understand Rowling's said that the stone will be lost to time, having been trod into the dirt by the centaurs joining the battle.

I wouldn't know, I don't have the American Edition. The English Edition only has 607 pages.

Hmm. Okay, then I guess since the American edition has 759 pages, what I'm referring to is probably near page 587 in the English one. (Out of curiosity, I'd kind of like to know how close that guess is....)

Not bad at all! It's at the bottom of page 588.

Just finished reading the book and I find it was kindof awesome.

And I'm happy. I finally managed to find one flaw(/inconsistency) in this book :lol
To be exact, when Harry breaks his wand, it is mentioned that although it doesn't work properly anymore, it still is whole after Hermione mends it. A few pages later "pieces of the wand" are mentioned.

Yeah, I know I'm nitpicky :) .

Sorry to pop your bubble, but near the top of page 349 (American), it says that when Harry attempts to perform magic with the wand, it again breaks in two.

What I find kind of interesting is the evolution of the fanfiction. I've followed Potter since book 4, and I've also been an occasional reader of fanfiction. It's a unique situation, the fanfiction is written based on the existing canon... but the canon changes! When Book 5 came out, a whole load of modifications had to be made.

I'm looking forward to post Book 7 fanfiction. There'll be some good stuff... amongst all the utter garbage.

I just tohught of a quite major disconsistency.
As you will know if you already read the book,

Then why the hell did he try and capture Sirius Black in the end of book three? Every way that I look at it, he should have known that he was not the one who killed all those people.
