Just thought up a new one while posting to the General board... so I thought I'd throw the idea in here. The Conscious Slime.

It can be cut on either corners or edges, but only with a direct sword strike, the sort that would break a mirror. Swiping wouldn't work. If there was an edge to your right the only way you could destroy part of it would be to have your sword facing right. Having it up-right or down-right would do nothing. Same for a corner - if there's a corner to your bottom-left, the only way it could be cut is by having your sword facing bottom-left into the corner. Having it facing left onto the corner wouldn't work.

(sorry if that explanation's a bit convoluted)

The extra addition to this is that the slime is *conscious*... so slime babies would act like brained roaches. This could give rise to a lot of cool mechanisms where you have some intelligent monsters and some dumb ones.

Wow. This is the best tarstuff variant I have seen for a long time. But I think the Conscious Slime should work like Gel: Only interconnecting parts could grow. Could it also be cut on inside corners?

You seem to be describing it that your sword has to face the correct position to cut it.
Would this work then?

Scenario:
\___/ (Edge of slime)
 |
 B (Beethro)

If you step northeast once now, it would still be the correct sword position, but mirrors wouldn't break.
Whereas if you step north it would be a direct assault and thus also break mirrors.
Which way is correct?

I think that he meant only moves that would break mirrors would break The Conscious Slime, it's just that his explanation was a bit confusing.

Even if that's not the intent, I think that's the way it should be. Otherwise, it's not different enough.

However, having an edge to the E would probably still allow for NE and SE stabbings.

Also, would the babies be killed in the same way? If so, and they have brained roach movement, then I think they'd be impossible to kill with Beethro alone.

The ability to have both "brained" and unbrained monsters in the same room sounds rather nice.

Yeah, that's the idea that I was going for. Pardon the slight unclearness in the explanation of the tarstuff, I should have done a diagram...

\___/
  |
  B

If Beethro moves once north, it will cut the slime

\___/
  /
 B

If Beethro moves either once north or once northeast, it will not cut the slime.

\___/
     \
      B

If Beethro moves once northwest, it will cut the slime
\___/
    |
    B

If Beethro moves once north, it will not cut the slime. Your sword must be perpendicular to the edge being cut.

But the main gist of the idea was to have both brained and unbrained monsters in a room - since it leads to a load of cool stuff.

So - the sword must be perpendicular to the edge being cut, right. But do you also have to step forwards?

For example:

B- |
   |
   |

If you step SE what happens?

If you step southeast, nothing will happen to the Slime. Your sword must be perpendicular to the Slime and then directly stabbed into it. Stepping east will leave a cut.

Slime mothers would have to be used sparingly and very carefully. You cannot cut or remove this stuff fast at all. It's very resilient.

Well, he compared stabbing the slime to breaking a mirror, i.e. yes.

In other words, you have to poke straight forward into the slime to pop it.

Perhaps we should call it "The Hardened Bubbles".

:P That's rather a cool name. As for a colour... green, red and blue have already been taken. I kinda like the idea of a cyan slime :)

I think it's too hard to cut if your sword has to be perpendicular and you have to move straight in. One or the other would be fine, although I prefer having to move straight in.

You may be right. Could even do two different variants - one requires perpendicular cuts, one has to be stabbed straight.

You should be. They'd be smart, evil and immune to hot tiles (as they're tarstuff)

*insert mad scientist type laughter here*
