Dear golden Bar, upon us you would glance
in moments rich in whimsy, wit and charm,
to speak with us, to tease and oft perchance
to bless us with your kindness, vast and warm.
Loquacious, witty, pert, you won renown
by cheery discourse, friendly repartee.
Now you look upon us with a frown -
disdain, that ill becomes one such as thee.
Austere and cold your manner now does seem;
aloof and almost silent is your way.
Your brooding gilding mocks us with its gleam;
a single message all that you will say.
No merry quips, no teasing, no largesse,
despite being loyally clicken and/or cloke.
You’re wreathed in grimness, causing such distress;
your generosity you’ve chosen to revoke.
It seems your final words to us you’ve preached.
Now desolate before your feet we fall.
Our plaintive cries we hope your ears have reached;
to our beloved Bar we sadly call.
Oh fie! Foreswear your cruelty, grant us grace
to hear your words of wisdom once again.
Assume, in honour great, your rightful place.
Let fall your bounty sweetly like the rain.
Most humbly we beseech you: cast your smile
on us, your subjects honouring your name.
Please leave us not in abject sorrow while,
allowing Time to wither all your fame.
Oh gilded paragon! you who we adore,
Your stark withdrawal our drear days doth mar.
Our lives are lessened without that fine store
Of sayings from our Great and Golden Bar.
