In this thread, ask any Drod-related question and other people will try to answer them. Try to be nice to the people with the questions, and try to become happy with your newly found answers. Don't get angry with other people and start arguments. If you do, someone can move those posts elsewhere. Don't get angry with me for starting this thread either.

To sum it all up; Someone will try to answer your questions that you post.

I'm sure that they have some sort of odd technique to move around. My guess is inlines.

They roll. There's some sort of bio-mechanic which holds the center of the eye parallel to the ground.

They're just like those clear plastic balls with the smaller, weighted eyeball-looking ball inside so that it always points the same way. Only bigger. And scarier.

Dear Infohut,

I'm an exterminator from east-central Dugandy who needs your
help.

At the local watering hole and on the smitemaster forums, I
keep hearing about "advanced techniques" for movement and sword
play. But no one who mentions them ever seems to give the
details, at least not louder than a whisper.

Now, I've cleared my share of holds. I work on my technique
relentlessly. I've got some moves. That backward shifting
technique, a few tricks for dealing with hordes, you know what I
mean.

But how do I know if I've learned enough? How do I know if
I'm a smitemaster or just a smiter who has survived a while?
How do I know if I've mastered all the techniques I'll need?

Here's what I'm asking for infohut: a taxonomy or
list or some delineation of these "advanced techniques" I
keep hearing about. Tell me infohut, I need to know.

All the best,

Quatro the Fourth

Here's a couple of tricks involving tar:

* If you're in a 3 wide tunnel with a tar mother, never cut the next section if there's less than 6 moves until the next spawn. It is more efficient to wait... by which I mean, cut the next section of tar as it spawns.

* If you're cutting through tar and realise you're going to have to fork off later, it is better to create the start of the fork so that you can later turn within the niche without cutting any more tar.

Adding to this:

* When killing a roach which is an odd amount of squares away, it is more efficient to use a pause before charging the roach (this presumes you want to return by the path you came from).

* A fleeing roach queen can always be caught as long as your sword points diagonally towards the target.

* Wraithwings need not be killed head-on. A move to the side as you approach can trigger a diagonal sword kill which may save you that move you need.

* However many goblins there are, it is always possible to charge through them... if only to start from a different entrance.

* It is possible to manipulate snakes to go right continously (and up). This can be helpful when dead ends are sparse.

* When cutting blocks of mud with mothers, always make sure you're in the middle of the diagonal as the mother spawns. This will save you from recarving that last diagonal.

* A roach queen's spawn provides a temporary shield against oncoming hordes. A fair selection of optimised scores rely on this fact.

Just a quick note.

While Syntax is right about it being more efficient to wait, that doesn't mean you need to wait for the tar to grow first. If you stab the tar on the turn that it would grow on, you actually prevent it from growing in that area by making a wall composed of two tar babies and your sword.

Most experienced players have probably figured this out, but I just didn't want novices to get thrown off too much by thinking Syntax was saying they should wait for the tar to spawn first.

You're right. I'll modify my original statement.

If you look carefully at my post you'll notice how I gradually stopped trying to sound Oracle-like and a bit more factual. I think I should stick to factual ;)

* The quickest way to penetrate a mass of Mud to the mother (or anything else in there) is to cut out only a quadrant. That is, only remove the Mud to the NW/NE/SW/SE (not including that on the same row or column) of the mother, whichever is quickest.

* One may dispose of an infinite number of goblins if one is in a passageway 3 squares wide, by manipulating one goblin at a time out from the horde and against the wall.

* If you don't need to turn your sword to kill an enemy... don't do so. It's frequently much more efficient to kill monsters by moving yourself with your sword left where it is. This is particularly true with hordes of brained monsters.

Oh, I don't know about that. I find the real rule of thumb for hordes is just to kill a monster every move as best you can.
