I personally am a massive fan of the Kingdom Hearts series. I am also currently obsessed with Guitar Hero 3 as well, although I haven't played all the games in the series yet

I've played and love the first Kingdom Hearts game!
I havent played the other ones yet though (the gba one or KH2...)

I really liked being able to explore disney places in 3D in it! Halloween Town was especially cool! ^_^

One of my all time favorite games is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (SMAC). It's _very_ reminiscent of the Civilization series. However, I've played almost all of the Civ games, and none of them have held my interest nearly as much as SMAC does. I actually just started a new game again today.

There was also an expansion pack made, Alien Crossfire. I haven't been able to play it yet, mainly because it had a limited production run. The discs sell for about $100 now :(.

The best part about SMAC is that has a decent storyline, unusual for most turn-based strategy games. Also, it's very customizable, has 5 different ways to win, and some awesome technology. Also, there are many different difficulty levels, and they really do get _hard_. <3

Dominions III.
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/Dom3/1.htm

It's a really good indy 4X game where you control one of many "Pretender" gods (You make your own.) who are all trying to become the real god. The game has a lot of everything. 50 nations, 600 spells, countless magic weapons, and over one thousand unique units. It's a bit expensive at fifty bucks, and you can't purchase it through download, only through mail. But if you have a bit of extra cash, get this game.

(PS the manual is over 300 pages.)
(PPS I am not making these statistics up.)

Arg, now you've got me wanting to play again :( . What I really love about SMAC is the setting, but then again I am a sucker for cyberpunk.

Depends what you mean by gameplay? Myst is all about exploring strange and atmospheric, beautiful alien worlds full of wonder. (Also, books. And puzzles.)

I've got Myst, Myst 2/Riven, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelation, Myst V: End of Ages, Uru (Complete Chronicles pack) and also RealMyst. Haven't played End of Ages yet though.

I like Myst :)

Okay, now I'm seeing if I can get a billion points in endless classic Tetris DS. :cool

Edit: Level 109! :w00t
Edit: I'm over 6 million points so far.
Edit: Ah, screw it. Getting to the limit is not going to be fun.

Tetris gives me such mixed emotions!

On one hand, I adore it so much and have lots of wonderful memories of it, as it was one of the first games I ever played! ^_^ It's still just as addictive!

But, at the same time, whenever I finish a game of it, I'm left with a kinda "oh." reaction... like in retrospect, I wonder why on earth I just spent so long dropping blocks, just to get a high score that I'll only glance at for about half a second before turning the game off. ^^;

Plus, any tetris game without the original gameboy version music somehow feels wrong!

My favourite version of Tetris remains, and will probably always remain, The New Tetris on the N64.

Why? It kept a count of the lines you'd made, and unlocked 'wonders' when you reached those line counts. Games felt much less pointless when you were working towards a wonder.

Isn't the entire point of Tetris that it's pointless? It's just fun.

Speaking of tetris and goals, I encourage everyone to search youtube for 'invisible tetris', or any other 'Tetris: The Grand Master' things!

Tetris: The Grand Master is definitely my favourite 'version' because its catered to experts... and rewards things that only experts know about. For example, filling the entire screen with solid blocks, except one missing on each row so you make a '>' pattern on the entire playfield, gets you the secret Grand Master rank. ^_^

(it's a technique that tetris masters use to practice)

So yeah, in The Grand Master, the game continues 'inivisibly' when you complete it and the credits are rolling. Managing to stay alive through the whole credits sequence also gets you the secret Grand Master rank. ^^ It's really impressive to watch!

Yeah, but when you've played the various versions for 15 years it does kind of get a bit old. I don't mind that added layer of gameplay on top, you know?

I was trying to think of any specific obsessions, and so far I've failed miserably. So let's just say gaming in general:

In text format, that's:

That just counts the stuff I have in my CD carousels. I have a few more on Steam or downloaded (eg FlatOut 2, and DROD of course) and a bunch of older games on floppy (including a whole lot of Apogee / id / Epic stuff), but no convenient database of those to dump from. :)

I tend to go through phases -- I'll play through a bunch of those old platformers, or party-based RPGs, or Sierra adventures, or space trader / flight sims, and when I've had enough of one category I'll move onto something else. Right now I'm back on FPSes -- just knocked off the two Half Life 2 episodes, and Gears of War and FEAR are probably next on the list. There's nothing up there which I've stayed obsessed with over time though.

Before I got my first PC in 1992, I had a Commodore 128D (which I only ever used for playing C64 games) and an Atari 2600. Hundreds of games on the C64 (mostly pirated, but as you can see I've grown up since then) and a couple of dozen A2600 cartridges. The A2600 is still around here somewhere. :)

Eeee! That is a lot!
Ive only ever had a few of those old big-box PC games... I mostly get console games these days, and the few PC ones I get are in DVD cases. ^^

There are definitely some cool games in that photo though! I'm immediately drawn to the YDKJ collection... I love YDKJ games!! ^_^

I'm similar in that I go through phases... myself though, I go through franchise fads instead of just genres. Like I'll read about a certain game series, and think it's awesome, and for the next few weeks I'll be sooo obsessed with that series...

...and then all of a sudden one day, I'll suddenly lose interest, and then find some other game franchise to obsess about! ^^;

Currently... I'm still in that 'lost interest' frame of mind... but I know that in a day or two, I'll be all giddy over something again. ^^ Just gotta wait til something I read online sparks my imagination. :3

Will do. Looks like it'll be an eBay job.

XIII is the other FPS game up there which I think failed to get the attention it deserved. Fantastic single-player, and we still break it out at LAN parties to play The Hunt. There's something about a little singing grim reaper which doesn't get old. :) Unfortunately the sales were pretty ordinary and they canned any plans to make the sequels.

Hmm, in that case I'd better warn you that it is a pretty old 3rd person shooter, but it is the inventor of bullet time in games, and it does a good job telling the story. The sequal IIRC has better gameplay, but the story gets a bit wonky.

I thought that that game was PS2 only, which was my only reason for not getting it. Ought to check it out.

You are absolutely right. That's one hell of a game :) still can't believe there isn't going to be a sequel. :(

Kingdom of Loathing has kept me gaming when marriage stopped me gaming (read "playing DROD") at home. No longer married, this could now change (blows dust off the laptop with JTRH on). I also play Call of Duty 2 networked with four friends once a month

Obsessions? Not like DROD. Some other computer games I've enjoyed are the Civilization games, Myst (original, Riven, and Exile), Heroes of Might and Magic, some RPGs (Baldur's Gate, on back to Bard's Tale). For a quick game, I like Popcap's casual games. No online or multiplayer gaming for me. I'm enjoying playing Portal right now.
But what about board and card games? I play quite a lot of these (plus, they're more fun at the pub). Cribbage is king of two-player games. With the family we play Hearts, Dominoes, and Golf. Puerto Rico is a great board game, along with Carcassone, Settlers of Catan, and Guillotine. And if you've ever played Munchkin, I'm sure you remember it.

I can divide games to two types.
Never-ending games:
#1 - Stepmania, my most precious game, one of the only games where I managed to stick around for long enough to become very good player :). Don't blame me, but I love it more than DROD... Unless I get into DROD playing mood (And I'm in it while writing this).
#2 - DROD. I just happen to lose interest in it for some time, just to return to it some other time.

Ending Games:
#1 - Metroid Series, especially Super Metroid (Aka Metroid 3) and Metroid Fusion. I completed each like 7 times. MF on 1% challenge, M3 on Hard game Hack. I actually never did play Metroids on Game Cube and DS (And Wii probably too) yet, but someday, when I will start getting some money, I shall change it.
#2 - Megaman Battle Network - Finished them all, and plan to someday use their battle system.

Megamans alltogether - I also finished almost every existing Megaman. They are hard, that's why they are good, but they are not great enough to become my obsession :P.

That would be it. Every time I laid my hands on new Metroid or Megaman Battle Networ, the great playing Marathon Began :).

Although MMOs don't really count as they're meant to be played a lot, I myself have been playing RuneScape on and off (mostly on) since July 2004. In fact I've been playing it a lot for the last 7 months or so which is why I'm slowly slipping down the Dr0d high score table. Unfortunately, I have the kind of mind where I love remembering stuff about games (I can tell you from memory a walkthrough for Fantasy Star IV which I haven't played for about 12 years!) and my brain is full of RuneScape knowledge - unfortunately this tends to push out other useful information like birthdays and anniversary dates :|

Another particular favourite of mine is Chaos - Battle of the Wizards. I recall getting this from one of the old Spectrum magazines, but I still give it a bash now and then - there is a flash version of it lying about somewhere

My own collection of games
Click here to view the secret text

*Recives a roundabout seal of Approval from me. Not to be taken too seriously because this is only a rough list and I'm sure I haven't put this next to nearly enough of the deserving games.

Note that this is a rough list of games owned or existing in the family, and doesn not include game for the Nintendo DS, the Playstation 2 and the Gameboy. To say nothing of borrowed games.

Yes. You hit the nail on the head there. Although the line begins to blur when it comes to the RTS's and RPG's.

I love The Sims 2! The first one was a lil blah cause it was so horribly flawed... like the sims would spend an HOUR of 'game time' going upstairs to use the bathroom and then coming back downstairs again, and would probably miss work because of it, and they worked every day 7 days a week...

but The Sims 2 made everything perfect ^_^ I'd play it obsessively if I had more time... my only problem with it, is that sometimes you can play it for hours, and it'd feel like you haven't really achieved anything at the end of it. ^^; Plus there's sooo much stuff to do in the game, that its hard to find time to do all of it... like whilst I love the nightlife expansion and such, it's hard to get 'around to' going to the nightlife district, cause you're always trying to do something else like raise their skills for a job promotion..

Still, it's a great game all the same! ^_^
