When I was seven, my dad took me to a Tall Tales at Oakland's Dimond Branch Library, where Muggsy Bogues was reading to kids. This was during Muggsy's first year with the Golden State Warriors, and I had come with a drawing I had made of his uniform. I showed my drawing to Muggsy at the end of the Tall Tales, and not only did he sign it, but I was mentioned in an Oakland Tribune article about the Tall Tales with my picture included.

I was "published" in Dragon magazine #117 - the Ring of Annulment and Ring of Distraction in the "Bazaar of the Bizarre" article. The attribution, though, is to my birth name, not my current name. It was my first money ever earned, as they paid me $16.

Um, I got something published on the school intranet. Once.

Yeah, it doesn't look like Paris Hilton and George Bush are on this forum.

Well, I publish the hospital intranet. Sometimes several times a day.

I'd be truly curious to see what percentage of people think Bush is intelligent. I suspect it might beat out his approval rating, since you aren't likely to approve of someone's job as president if you think they are dumb, but you can disapprove someone's job and still think they are intelligent.

Most of them probably only approve of him because he's a republican candidate. Not for any merits he may or may not have.

I don't want to mention whether I support Bush or not, but it is a constant irritant the way people act like he's an idiot. I will point out that he did get an MBA from Harvard Business School. Agree or disagree with his policies, you can't change that fact.
It doesn't annoy me because of political or personal leanings so much as it annoys me because of the stigma that people place on his speaking patterns. As a student of linguistics and language (not officially, but I do enjoy studying it) it annoys me mainly because the thing people mostly ever point to regarding his intelligence is his manner of speaking. I spend a semester studying grammar and accents and we spent a good long while addressing the fact that, justifiable or not, your manner of speaking will cause people to label you intelligent or not without merit. An intelligent person can make policies you do not agree with as well as speak with a southern accent. And few idiots can pull off an MBA from Harvard.

I don't know what you understand by "manner of speaking", but someone who calls another very influential politician "a good fellow" clearly lacks manners, intelligence or both.

I don't see how that indicates a lack in either manners or education. And if I see nothing wrong with it, how can you say that everyone else and every other culture sees it the same way? Word usage is just as much a part of the area you grow up in as accent is. Now, if you have footage of him jumping on a pogostick on top of a skateboard, we can talk about his intelligence. Otherwise, it's a word choice you disagree with or a pollicy that you take issue with.

Yep...I wasn't seeing any politics debated here yet. I do see some claims and labeling. I appreciate Garlonuss' presentation of facts to make an argument. Observe that making an argument is very different than making a claim.

True, but what was happening here could have become an argument, and really, no one wants that.

Sorry, I meant argument in the sense of "a course of reasoning aimed at demonstrating truth or falsehood" or "a fact or statement put forth as proof or evidence". I don't have any problem with these, and I don't think anyone else here does either, unless they're worried they might spend some time reading something that is uninteresting to them personally.

However, I do think many people here *do* have a problem with someone starting a bashing session, including me. Nothing personal, though.

As much as I'm not a Bush fan, I don't see a problem with him saying things like "Yo, Blair" or whatever, as long as it's not meant in a demeaning way.

You don't have to sound all formal and pompous to have brains, and respect for people -- in fact I'd be happier hearing the informality because it shows to me that the people involved have a closer relationship than they would otherwise.

(*) Actually, in this case, I'm NOT at all pleased with the Bush/Blair relationship, but some people have criticised the informal language sometimes used as a be-all-and-end-all to it, which I don't agree with.

Back on topic.... Erik is famous, isn't he ?

I suspect there's no way to gather from their public personas exactly how smart Bush is - of, for that matter, Paris Hilton, considering her entourage claim it's mostly an act to grab headlines. I have my own theories about Bush, but I'll refrain from sharing them.

The whole 'you're seen as intelligent as you speak' bit is something I'm keenly aware of - I've noticed that those who avoid using proper English in their forum posts are often seen as less intelligent, and I've been sprinkling my speech with Californian slang for so long it's become involuntary. (I've never liked the stereotype of the intelligent using gigantic words, but I like gigantic words and don't want to get grief for it.)

I hear you on that one. My friends get on my case because I use words like 'ostensibly' in casual conversation. They tell me I'm trying to show off my knowledge. Most of the time I just can't think of another word that fits without losing meaning.
