Sorry if the answer is meshed somewhere in these nine pages :~(
I've got Windows XP and I've tried to install the DROD 3.2 patch on my existing DROD but it always asks for a directory to install it in, but none of them work. I tried putting it in Data, the Drod directory, desktop, AAAGH!! Plz help!
Sorry, I just picked the ones that showed someone mad or frustrated. And while you're busy downmodding me, could you at least give me some help with my actual question? :blush :?

Good...goodness. Was there thought put into those smilies, or was it just a random collection of clicks/thought of how much more awesomeness would be inserted into your post with a yellow face that could not be expressed in words?

Diminishing returns. One should suffice.

So it won't work if you install it to a different directory? Because I tried to do that several times.

Did you try to remove it completely and reinstall it?

But before you do, first copy all your ".dat"-files to a back-up directory, they are located in the data directory.
then uninstall DROD-TCB
and install it back
than copy your ".dat"-files back into the data-directory

Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but if you are running the patch, you want to use the exact same directory path where your installation of DRoD-TCB is located. If you uninstalled TCB, then the patch file has nothing to patch.

You can use the search function for "drod.exe" if you can't remember the directory where you installed TCB.

I installed it, copied the files to another directory, and uninstalled the original directory in a successful attempt to not get it to show up on the control panel (mom issues). So it won't work? :no

Normally if you install the game,
and then install the patch in the same directory.
It should work.

if you not want to lost your progress copy the ".dat"-files in the data directory.

if this doesn't work, you might have a virus or something?

Ok, zwetschenwasser, let me see if I understand -

Your current situation is that you don't have TCB installed at all, and that you have copies of the .dat files from your old install, right?

You need to do the following:

1. Download TCB again (follow the download link at the top of the forum). Get the full version, it is the latest version and if you install it you won't need the patch.
2. Install it, and run it to make sure it works. Look at the top right corner of the screen - if it says "3.2.0.83" you are ok.
3. Take the .dat files from the old install, and copy them over the .dat files in the new directory.
4. Try running TCB.

Now there are two options:

5A. Almost certainly, everything will work fine. In which case, you don't have to do anything else.

or

5B. You will get errors and DROD won't run properly. In which case, the old .dat files are incompatible, and you need to uninstall DROD yet again, re-install it, and write support@caravelgames.com and explain to them what happened. They might be able to help you restore your progress.

Robin, and everyone else - always advise people to export their player and self-made holds in addition to making copies of the .dat files. Some of the older versions of TCB have incompatible .dat file formats, and exports (or conversion by means of the patch installer) are the only safe ways to keep your data.

Unfortunately, we cannot help you with that, as we don't have the tools or the means to restore your progress. I'm very sorry about that, but until Matt invents some clever way of storing player info on the CaravelNet server, this won't be possible. :(

zwetschenwasser doesn't have caravelnet, so that's moot anyway. I was thinking more along the lines of finding an unpatched copy of DROD, taking the dat files, and exporting the player/holds.

The cool thing about Windows programs is that you can have all the files needed to run it without having it "installed" per ce, simply by copying the whole directory structure that holds the necessary run files and then uninstalling it. You end up with a perfect (or nearly perfect) installation of the program and a naive Control Panel. That is what I did and the copied directory structure is what I'm trying to run the patch on. -_-

Not a problem. Just change the installation directory to where it actually is, then it should work just fine.

I just did the exact same thing because I reinstalled Windows after swapping my mainboard, CPU and graphics card and while it didn't add anything to the start menu, the patch worked just fine.

Could it be you're actually missing one of the files or directories the patch works on?

How about posting the tree of your current DROD directory?
Start -> run -> "cmd"
CD to the folder
copy and paste the output of "DIR *.* /S"

Also, are you selecting the actual directory when patching or the parent directory? You need to pick the actual one.

Finally, if you're happy with using "regedit", do a find on DROD (make a backup first)... you should find a DROD installion path key. Change its value to the current one...
If you uninstalled DROD, it may not exist though...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Caravel\DROD\3_0]
"InstallLocation"="C:\\Program Files\\DROD - The City Beneath Demo"
"Version"="3.2 Build 3_2_build83 demo"

Obviously you'll need to change the actual data to what applies in your situation - probably not the demo, probably an older build, and probably in a different location.

Just one question - what's DROD's install folder doing in "C:\visioresourcekits\Visio Backups\visioresourcekits\Visio Templates\"?

The canonical install location for almost all software you install on Windows would be "C:\Program Files\"...

Well, your listing is missing the first few lines.

It's probably the wrong directory anyway, but if you are using this version, then you are missing a lot of .dat files in the Data directory.

Did you still have the old .dat files? There should be about 6 .dat files in there.

I'm posting here, as I just encountered the same problem that zwetschenwasser did when using the new patch installer on a TCB installation that was moved from its original spot. Zwetschenwasser is not crazy or stupid, as some posters have implied, just a little unobservant.

There's a teeny tiny glitch in the installer. When the installer asks what directory to install the patch in, zwetschenwasser has to browse to the directory he moved the drod.exe application to. If he does that all by mouse clicking, as any normal person would, the installer places some extra text at the end of the correct directory name, making it the incorrect directory. It's hard to see that extra incorrect text in the directory name, as it's off screen in the installer's dialog box.

How to get around the glitch: type the correct directory name in manually or delete the extra text manually. In my case, the extra text to be deleted was an extra "DROD - The City Beneath".

And thanks so much to TFMurphy for helping me find that. :)

icon DROD RPG 1.1 Update (+1)
We've officially released DROD RPG:Tendry's Tale version 1.1 (build 54). You may find it on the Downloads page. (Don't confuse this with the old 1.0.1 patch.)

The 1.1 patch fixes all known bugs, and improves certain play aspects (see this thread for the complete list of changes).

Separate from the patch, which basically fixes bugs and tweaks game behavior, the 1.1 demo and full installs contain several improved game graphics and fixes to the official Tendry's Tale hold. Installing the full version of 1.1, and starting a new play session after installation, is required for uploading verifiable, permanent scores to CaravelNet.

Linux and Mac versions soon forthcoming. :thumbsup

For anyone interested in tiny updates, I've made new demo/full installs of DROD RPG 1.1 that include the missing shadows from the Tendry graphics. If you've already installed 1.1, you can install this version on top of it with impunity.
