Re: "Architectural Bad Habits: Backtracking" Compilation (0)
For demos, I actually have a complete demo set for the hold I submitted in the contest submission thread, which I'll attach here. However, I (or someone) will have to go and re-create them inside the contest hold in order for them to be actually useful, so I'll work on that a bit later.
I'll dedicate the rest of this post to a 'hint guide', which I'll put in a big secret here.
Click here to view the secret text ×The first few rooms should be straightforward, until 2E, where the first " riddle" is posed. So...
Click here to view the secret text ×2E:
Click here to view the secret text ×The man in 2E says something about eyes. Where are there " eyes" in the hold so far?
A:
Click here to view the secret text ×Why did he say " minds" , plural? How can you kill your mind?
Click here to view the secret text ×" Mind" =" Brain" , and only one room so far has brains, two of them.
Click here to view the secret text ×If you enter 1S1E from the east side, you have access to two Evil Eyes. Now you just need to imprison them before stabbing the two brains in the same room.
Click here to view the secret text ×You can imprison the eyes in the southern part of the room, between the two yellow doors that close when (11, 10) is stepped on. The rest is manipulation to make that happen.
B:
Click here to view the secret text ×There's another place where you can see " eyes" , and it's right there on the map in front of you.
Click here to view the secret text ×If you look closely, 1N1E has a part that looks an awful lot like an upside-down smiley face.
Click here to view the secret text ×We're supposed to fill those eyes with blood? How do you fill something with blood? Oh, wait, " or something that rhymes" . What could we have access to, maybe in the future, that rhymes with " blood" ?
Click here to view the secret text ×If we could just access the western entrance to this room, we'd be able to use the mud/gel token. After that, just fill the eyes with mud! But we can't do that immediately on reaching 2E.
After 2E...
Click here to view the secret text ×The only way we can clear at first is north, and it should be fairly straightforward what to do from there, unless you don't understand 2N1E. For that:
Click here to view the secret text ×Imagine the room you've just been through before turning the corner, and how it would look if you rotated the perspective a bit.
The next thing we get access to is a scroll.
Click here to view the secret text ×Where have we been, very recently, with something of those colors?
Click here to view the secret text ×1N2E. We're going to have to restore.
Click here to view the secret text ×Black=wraithwing, Green/Red/Blue=tarstuff babies. But one color isn't mentioned...
Click here to view the secret text ×We must spare only the brain, so kill the wubba with a hot tile after everyone else is gone. The rest is tricky manipulation to get things in the right order.
Now, what did that achieve?
Click here to view the secret text ×It gave the soldiers something to do. Where are there anything resembling " soldiers" ?
Click here to view the secret text ×The stalwarts in 1E will move out of the way now, so we can access the western entrance of 1N1E. Think back on the hint from 2E to find out why this is useful.
Finally,...
Click here to view the secret text ×We can go south from 2E! This is the home stretch...sort of.
Click here to view the secret text ×The four rooms available here are initially straightforward; our main goal for now is just to read the two scrolls in the eastern rooms.
Did you read those two scrolls? Then you're ready...
Click here to view the secret text ×for the ritual. Just follow the instructions, it's that easy!
Click here to view the secret text ×Okay, okay. The first thing is to clear " the bend" , which is 2S2E. But where do we actually need to conduct this ritual?
Click here to view the secret text ×Which room looks like it has the right atmosphere?
Click here to view the secret text ×Where can we find someone to " stare at himself" , and a " baby" ? And " muck" that an " arrow" is pointing at?
Click here to view the secret text ×1S2E. In fact, we need that room to be not clear in order to perform the ritual in it. This is a good time to unclear a room using tarstuff, in the classic backtracking-issue fashion.
Click here to view the secret text ×Now, to follow the instructions, " he" should stare " south" , at " himself" . Where could he be in order to do that?
Click here to view the secret text ×The baby is in " another corner" , so " he" should be in a corner, too.
Click here to view the secret text ×Those four pressure plates around the gel blob look suspicious, right?
Click here to view the secret text ×You're supposed to stand to his east, probably at yet another corner.
Click here to view the secret text ×Okay, the next one will spoil the whole recipe.
Click here to view the secret text ×Aumtlich on top left button, gel baby on bottom right, mirror on bottom left with Aumtlich staring at it, Beethro faces south-west, also toward the mirror. Make sure there's no gel in the same column as the north-facing force arrow, too. And then you literally just wait a few turns.
Click here to view the secret text ×Green turns to red, and now you must destroy everything. Not just the monsters and mud...
Click here to view the secret text ×Why was it so important that the bend be clear?
Click here to view the secret text ×You need to go south through the secret walls starting at 30, 19 after obliterating all monsters, gel, and powder kegs in the room, breaking all of the walls as you go. Then the ritual is complete; you'll see the green doors disappear if you were successful. But what else did it do?
Click here to view the secret text ×Go back to 2E.
If you did everything above, then...
Click here to view the secret text ×You finally have access to the " map room" , with its final set of hints on how to complete the level.
Click here to view the secret text ×The map room talks about a " sequence" , and gives directions on how to complete it. There are also hints on how to open the way so that you even can complete the sequence in the prescribed order.
Setup 1:
Click here to view the secret text ×The scroll corresponding to 1N2E says to do something different, so we'll have to restore to before that point.
Click here to view the secret text ×The instructions are similar to the ones we used before. Click here to view the secret text ×The wubba dies first, then the tarstuff babies in any order. Then who?
Click here to view the secret text ×The wraithwing is last, and we have to conquer the room, so the brain should die before him.
Setup 2:
Click here to view the secret text ×The scrolls corresponding to the rooms we got instructions for the ritual in have some modifications to that ritual, so we'll have to re-do it a little differently.
Click here to view the secret text ×The scroll where " part 1" was says to do the ritual just like before, but leave some mud behind. You'll know you did this right if the green door is gone from 2S2E.
Click here to view the secret text ×On your way out from doing that, remember that you can't leave the room clear.
Click here to view the secret text ×The scroll where "part 2" was says to just re-do the ritual again after that, and we'll be set. We don't even have to re-clear the bend!
Walking the path:
Click here to view the secret text ×If everything's been set up as it should, then this should be straightforward enough. Start by going to the entrance, then go east. Now...
Click here to view the secret text ×" Pass the soldier first" . Enter 1N1E on the west side.
Click here to view the secret text ×" Don't pass the soldier again" and " don't go out this way" (that is, the east way). That just leaves the central exit, so go that way.
Click here to view the secret text ×We wind up in 1S1E's center entrance, and then we need to go out the east way, " breaking the chain."
Click here to view the secret text ×East to 2E, then go south.
Click here to view the secret text ×On reaching the ritual room, move clockwise through this room and the one south of it, then go counter-clockwise, then go back to 2E.
Click here to view the secret text ×Go all the way north, then back to the south to 2E again.
Click here to view the secret text ×Go west, and keep going west, to reach the end at last.
