If I was you, I'd just install an IRC client - the Mac might even come with one. I found this page which lists some free ones.
A decent IRC client won't be scary in any way. It'll usually just ask you for a server (irc.waypasteleven.com), a channel (#drod) and a username. I'm afraid I can't recommend any myself as I've yet to use any on a Mac, but from the list above, "Colloquy" looks very approachable.
Colloquy is the one that I use when I do IRC. Not that I do it often, but... I've spent my share of time in IRC chats, and Colloquy was always fine for me.
I had more trouble learning how to use IRC in the first place than I did with that software.
