×In my demo, on turn 9 of the cycle, the snake is two tiles south of the northern alcove, one row east of the trap.
Next turn, it moves west. On turn 3, it is west of the trap. I get east of the head and it moves North. It will then go into the alcove and takes several turns to get out of it, making it reach horizontal preference again.
If your problem is that you can't get the snake to move west from that particular tile, then you might be making the mistake of only using the two columns directly under the alcove. There are 10 tiles in those two columns, so if you lead it through all of them you'll just wind up just keeping it in the same position in the cycle. Try letting it go east at least one column for better results.
Edit: well, that would explain it. Best to look for a thread for the right version so I can better help you, then.
second edit: Actually it turns out that I used the same process to get past that trap in both versions.
