Spin Me A Yarn!
"
The fire is lit and sheds warmth and light throughout the room, everyone is drawn to its soft glow. Guests settle down into their comfortable seats around the fireside waiting for the storyteller to begin telling his or her yarn. Thus begins the evening ritual in many inns throughout the Eighth.
At the Fireside Inn of Grensworthy there is something special this month -- they are the host of The Great "
Spin Me A Yarn"
Contest."
So this month some of the greatest bard tellers from around the Eighth will come to tell their tales and try and regal the judges with the tales about the Eighth, tales you hardly would believe, if you had not seen it yourselves. You are among the Storytellers."
"
What yarn will you spin for us?"
"
As a Storyteller your challenge is to spin us a yarn based on the Eighth. One that will keep our attention till the very end. A yarn that is both plausible and unbelievable at the same time. Hurry, we can hardly wait...."
Judging
Notice to our Guests and Judges
"Welcome guests and visitors to the Fireside Inn of Grensworthy."
"
This month we are hosting
The Great "Spin Me A Yarn" Contest."
"
It begins today and will run until
05-19-2008 5:00AM.
Special Important Must See Announcement:
So, sorry the clockwinder calculator fellow messed up the dates again. He has been fired but the time you had to vote was incorrectly posted. Voting extended until 05-20-2008 11:00pm PST "
"
Storytellers can enter their story at any time during that period but the entry period for stories will end sharply at 05-15-2008 5:00AM and voting will end sharply
4 5 days later. The winners for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be submitted to the grand counsel before the 05-21-2008 5:00AM deadline and posted here as well."
"
The three top winners receive prizes in addition to their potatoes. See the rules for our list of prizes. The Grand Prize is a Contract for the year at our end which includes a new Padded Chair by Stuffel placed right next to the fire, something every Storyteller desires."
"
We hope to have a large number of storytellers that will weave their tales and spin their yarns for you. Pull up a soft chair and sit a spell by the fire till they come."
"
Each story should not last more than half an hour. For more about the rules, check the rules."
"
Here is a bucket of 10 potatoes, you can award them for the stories you like. You can spread them around or give all of them to one storyteller. In the past the tradition has been that to award your potato, you just toss them at the storytellers feet, but because guests have complained about the heavy buckets and the Storytellers have complained about bruising to their feet we have made new arrangements this year."
"
Just copy the information from the 'Official Notice' posted with each story and state how many potatoes you want to credit to it. A steward will deliver your potatoes to the Storyteller at the end of the contest."
"
If you are shy and don't want others to see your votes, you can PM me your votes and I will post them on the list as Anonymous or you can use the hide until tag
[unhidetime= 05-20-2008 11:00pm PST (bracket)Your hidden text. Replace the brackets with the correct []'s You have 10 potatoes to distribute.(bracket) /unhidetime]."
"
Only one bucket of 10 potatoes per guest, please. This rule will be strictly enforced. So, you may want to wait till all the Storytellers have finished to award your potatoes. You will have until
05-19-2008 5:00AM 05-20-2008 11:00pm PST to do that."
"
Every Storyteller that makes an entry will receive an automatic 10 potatoes for their entry."
"
In addition, a Storyteller may return as a guest and receive a bucket of 10 potatoes, but while we know each Storyteller thinks they are the best storyteller ever heard, we have a rule that you can not award yourself your own potatoes. You must award them to others."
"
Also, only postings which bear the official notice can be awarded potatoes. See the rules for a complete description of the official notice."
"
While you don't have to review every entry, we hope you will take a look at them all. If you don't like listening to one, just move on to the next and keep your potatoes for someone else."
"
Judge the entry on how entertaining it was and how well it kept to the rules."
"
That's about all, so sit back and enjoy, or come back another time to take them all in at once."
"
Oh, one more item...."
"
Please understand that from time to time we have storytellers who are not as, how shall we say it, not as perfect in their use of the (Simpuhl) English language as you, so please, excuse their accent. I am sure you will still greatly enjoy their story."
"
Also, no potato throwing will be tolerated at any time, thank you."
"
Why not consider entering this event as a Storyteller yourself."

×1. Method of Presentation
You can tell us verbally or in writing, or you can even build a hold. Be creative. The idea is to keep us interested. Visitors come and go. Your job is to get them to stick around and hear (read or see) the whole story. If you can think of another medium for your yarn-weaving then ask me for approval. I will probably give it.
2. About the Story
Your story should be based on the Eighth and if you want to earn the most potatoes you should be very entertaining and follow all the rules.
The story should take no longer that 30 minutes to either hear, read, play or see the whole thing but it must be long enough to make the guest feel you really told them a story. If you can do that in 5 minutes, great.
For holds that have puzzles in addition to scripts or in-game video, please keep this 30 minute time limit in mind. You will want the story to be the main attraction not the puzzles.
Definition:
"spin a yarn":
"Tell a story, especially a long drawn-out or totally fanciful one, as in 'This author really knows how to spin a yarn', or 'Whenever he's late he spins some yarn about a crisis'. Originally a nautical term dating from about 1800, this expression probably owes its life to the fact that it embodies a double meaning, yarn signifying both 'spun fiber' and 'a tale.'" (From Answers.com)
3. Posting and Voting
All the entries need to be posted in this thread by no later than 05-15-2008 5:00AM. Guest can vote at anytime until 05-19-2008 5:00AM or they run out of potatoes. That means there are 4 days between when the last story can be entered and all the judges can vote.
The winners for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be submitted to the grand counsel before the 05-21-2008 5:00AM deadline and posted here as well. See below for the list of prizes.
Each judge is given 10 potatoes in a bucket and can vote them all to you or spread them around. As a Storyteller you get 10 potatoes just for entering and an additional 10 potatoes to vote with, but you can not give those potatoes to yourself or make any deals with other Storytellers about distributions of your votes. Deal-makers will be kicked out of the contest and the inn and notices will sent to all the other inns warning them of your behavior.
4. Official Notice
Each entry must have one of these required official notices:
"This is the Yarn [Name of Story].
Told in the written tradition by [Name of Storyteller]."
"This is the Yarn [Name of Story].
Told in the oral tradition by [Name of Storyteller]."
"This is the Yarn [Name of Story].
Told in the hold tradition by [Name of Storyteller]."
The notice must appear as the first line in the post or at the top if it is the only text. It must be formatted in '+1' and 'blue' text. The notice must match the method you, the storyteller, have chosen to tell your yarn in. If you have been given special permission to use a method not listed then I will give you an approved notice upon your approval.
5. Entry Information
You can have up to 3 entries, but as with another contest, you must wait until someone else posts an entry before you can post your next entry. This means we will not have your entries in a row.
If your entry is audio then use the following format: WAV, OGG, or MP3 files. It is recommended to use settings of 16bit, 44.1 khz, mono, but it isn't required. If you choose to put your offering in a WAV file, put the WAV file into a ZIP or RAR file. Watch your file size.
You can also post the text of your story if you like. Use a secret tag so if someone wants to follow along or if they can not play your file for some reason (like they do not have speakers) they can still enjoy the story.
If your entry is in writing then you must write it in your posting. You can use all the features of the forum in your storytelling but it can not be an attached file. It can be in a secret tag, but that is not required.
If you build a hold then you will need to attach it to a post here, in this thread.
Do not forget to place the required notice in the post.
6. Special Instructions:
If English is not your strongest language then place the phrase: "Please, excuse my accent" at the beginning of your story. It is my hope that no one will mark you down for errors that come from a lack of knowledge of English, but we can not guarantee it.
7. Prizes

I have been continually playing contest on the forum since Dec 2004. Having often been addressed as a he my new avatar shows that I am a "
Lady"
. And one with a very sharp sword, too.
I love the monthly contests but it took me a long while before I even placed. 21 contests in fact.
Virtual Burning Man was the first contest I took any place in and I got 1st, wow!. Yes, I have received my prize, a sweatshirt from the DROD store, and I love it.
It took 14 more contest but next I took 1st prize in Media of the Eighth Nov07, followed by a win in the Secret Santa 2007. Check out my entry:

Suddenly I was a winner but, still the goal of a winning hold based contest eludes me....
I keep trying so come and join me.
