I like to delete Holds I'm bored with or stuck on from my Change Location screen to keep it neat and tidy. However if I then want to reinstall one of the Holds I have deleted I have to start again from the beginning. It'd be neat if DROD could remember your progress on Holds that you've uninstalled.

I think this would also solve the problem of having to reinstall all one's Holds into a new version of DROD to transfer data.

My solution is to not delete holds.
I think they're taking care of the upgrade issue some other way.

Since I doubt Mike will want to add this as-is, I offer up an alternate solution:

When you delete a hold, DROD asks you if you want to export saved games for just that hold. Or it could be automatic if prompts would get annoying.

Actually, if done right, then when a hold is imported, DROD could auto-import saves for the hold if you've got them saved off from a previous delete. That could be kinda cool.

This sounds like an excellent idea. It seems like it would either a) require caravelnet so you can check hold ID number, or b) some sort of checksum to make sure you have the same hold. Of course I'm clueless about how demos know which hold they belong to even without Caravelnet, so I could be completely wrong on this?

I'd suggest <player profile>_<hold name> for the default file name so players can easily know which file it is if they decide they really do want to delete the saves later.

No, I think the original request is doable -- we'll just need to be careful implementing it.

On deleting a hold, DROD would ask whether the player wants to retain saved game progress and demos for that hold. If so, DROD would keep the stub record for that hold around and just delete the levels in the hold. Hmm...stub records might need to be kept around for the levels and rooms too, but all the media associated with those rooms could be erased. With a couple tweaks for reimporting the hold, it might work like that.

If implemented this way, I still stand by my request that there be some sort of easy way for a user to reconsider and delete save data as well. In this case, maybe a special menu listing stored data for deleted holds. Otherwise you get a bunch of almost* untouchable data that may never be needed again.

*Almost because you can always redownload the hold just to redelete it.

Sure, that makes sense. We can do that.

Perhaps deleted holds would appear in the holds menu, with the name greyed-out, so they can show in the view all list. No, wait... that's Caravelnet holds. I suppose it has to be a separate view section then.
