There were a few IRC DROD channels in the past, but they were not very popular...

Oh, here's something cool I found recently - click here and you should be able to chat with anyone else who clicks this link, right in the browser. You won't be able to use the same window to login and post comments on the forum though, but you may open another tab or something.

There was an IRC channel a few years ago, but it never really took off, and that was well before the in-game chat. Nowadays, I don't think an IRC channel could take off when most people can already use the in-game chat. For that matter, CaravelNet chat is fairly quiet on most days, so I don't see room for another, separate chat medium.

I suppose you could build a gateway between an IRC channel and the in-game chat, but I don't really expect that to work. CaravelNet chat is hand-tailored and based on HTTP, whereas IRC is its own protocol, so you will have some trouble converting back and forth. That, the in-game chat is supposed to be one of the features that justifies paying for CaravelNet, so I wouldn't expect CaravelGames to open up the chat to everyone.

Would be a cool thing in my opinion, but hey, not everyone likes irc chats. Maybe CaravelNet should include a Forum Shoutbox? Itīs easier for most guys then.

Well, I just joined and there's no-one there. I'm going to hang around there though, so if you pop along, say hello.

I might not be at the computer though.

Also, for those of you using a regular IRC client, just /connect irc.waypasteleven.com

Then /join #drod

OK, that was moderately (though not massively) successful. Five of us turned up total, and good chats were had.

I'm still there, so pop in if you want to say hello :)

It's bad form to quote yourself, but hey:

Alneyan wrote:CaravelNet chat is hand-tailored and based on HTTP, whereas IRC is its own protocol, so you will have some trouble converting back and forth.

The in-game chat just doesn't use IRC, so you'd have to code your own gateway of sorts.

Pardon the necro, but this needs promoting. Yes, there are a few people who chat in this DROD IRC channel - #drod on irc.waypasteleven.com

So, now that it's established, and that you know people go there - come along! Join us and chat. No, we're not there all the time, but usually there's at least one or two others there :)

you don't need chatzilla, that site already has a java applet. Just can't figure out how to change channels XD

EDIT: Ah, triple click.

Ah, but not everyone has Java installed - or has applet support *spit* enabled in their browser...

You wouldn't use a silly Java applet for reading your email either, would you?

OK guys - connecting here is now even easier. If you don't have an IRC client, just follow this link. It's a handy little java IRC application that will automatically let you connect to the channel. Just enter your chosen nickname and then click the Connect button.

DROD IRC

EDIT: Yes, it's a bit quiet. But it won't stop being quiet unless people stay! So, if when you come in there's only a couple of other people... hang around. Be patient :)

Unfortunately not. I do require sleep from time to time.

But if I'm at my computer (about 12 hours a day currently. Damned thesis writeup :S ) then I'm active.

If I was you, I'd just install an IRC client - the Mac might even come with one. I found this page which lists some free ones.

A decent IRC client won't be scary in any way. It'll usually just ask you for a server (irc.waypasteleven.com), a channel (#drod) and a username. I'm afraid I can't recommend any myself as I've yet to use any on a Mac, but from the list above, "Colloquy" looks very approachable.

As big as it needs to to get all the information, analyses and conclusions that I've done over the last 4 year in.

So it'll probably end up in the 300s

:P Only if you do a PhD.

Also, my thesis is unusual, it has a lot of electron microscope images which take up lots of space. Most theses are in the 100-200 page range.

Colloquy is the one that I use when I do IRC. Not that I do it often, but... I've spent my share of time in IRC chats, and Colloquy was always fine for me. :) I had more trouble learning how to use IRC in the first place than I did with that software.

My thanks to Syntax and Hikari.

"If I was you, I'd just install an IRC client - the Mac might even come with one." My mac has iChat; is that any use? I haven't ever set it up because I have never had any use for it. My writing site has a chat room, but I didn't need to download anything to use it. I just click and it opens.

"Colloquy is the one that I use when I do IRC." Thanks for the recommendation. If iChat won't do, then I'll have a look at that.

Incidentally, what is 'IRC'? :~(
