Quick question.

Obviously, you can't put copyrighted sound effects/music into your holds. What about music/sound that's under a Creative Commons license. Specifically, the stuff I want to use is under this license - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

Free to use provided I credit the performers/author.

Just want to absolutely double check that it's OK to include this? Also, still waiting for voice actors for my hold :) Got plenty of volunteers... but no voice samples yet ;) I can't help it, I'm impatient.

That description sure sounds like you could use the sound unmodified with proper attribution. I'd include a scroll at the beginning giving the URLs where the sounds and that license can be found, just to be safe. You can probably consider a hold to loosely fall under the category of "Collective Work" used in the legal definition, meaning you're not required to make the hold CC in turn.

IANAL etc. -- just my guesses and what I'd do.

Mmmm. There's going to be a room on the very first level with all appropriate credits and acknowledgements, so I should be fine then.

You can, but only if you have the copyright holder's license to do it. (If the material isn't copyrighted, then there are no reserved rights that could be licensed to you.)

Read the full legal text though. They specifically mention synching sound to image as creating a derivative rather than collective work. This means that you might get away with schep's advice in the case of music and ambient sounds, if at all. Any sounds that get played "because" something happens on the screen are specifically excluded, so if you use cc-by-sa sounds for that sort of thing, the hold has to be released under the same or an equivalent license. Because cc-by-sa allows modifications, the effect on you would be that you'd have to make it anyone-edit, and you couldn't complain if anyone used your puzzles in their own hold.

...dammit. I don't want to make my hold anyone-edit. I'll have to cancel my plans to use that particular bit I was planning to use. I'll try to find some alternative stuff. There's plenty of "public domain" stuff on the net, but getting the stuff under the right license is annoying.

Under that license, you wouldn't have to. The license says that you have to make it available. You could just link to it if you didn't change it, for instance.
