Just reasking, around how many % you will show us the features included in TCB like you did with JtRH before its release?

Will the system requirements be posted? I've got an old computer and if those have increased I might not be able to run it.

I think the the system requirments will be very, very close to that of JtRH(If your computer can play JtRH, it can play TCB) anyway, even if it doesn't, you can always turn off some of the settings, which should do the trick.

Also, here is the only place you can get TCB at the moment. They will probably allow paid for preorders when TCB is nearer to completion.

Considering the experience of last time, where we pretty much blew the surprise, I'd hope they do it as late as possible.

Yes, TCB should have basically the same system requirements. I've tried to keep supporting lower-end machines with the bells-and-whistles turned off, so running in Win95 on a Pentium Pro with 64MB RAM and a 4MB graphics card supporting 1024x768 resolution...and a 300 baud modem... :P should work in theory. But if you've still got all of those, I'd recommend upgrading. That is, have at least 128MB RAM and a 500MB processor so you can experience the extra goodies and elbow room provided by the new 3.0 parameter settings. And the more you have of this the better. This list isn't finalized yet, but there are already lots of things that can be tweaked by the hard-core DRODer.

I'm planning to build the Linux version for i686 processors unless this results in major outbursts of rabid rage and destruction (JtRH is still built for i586). That means no Pentium or AMD K5 and below, but Pentium Pro and AMD K6 should be ok.

But, of course, TCB is also Open Source, so you could potentially build it for lower CPUs if you really wanted to. I think 486 is the lowest you can go if you throw game feedback completely out the window, although 386 might be possible too, if you manage to load it with enough RAM.

I'd be amazed if you got it running on a ColecoVision, though*.

Quoted for emphasis - I'm in a similar situation, and I'm curious.

Wait a second, I'm not running i686, and I've upgraded my box recently so I probably should be... Hmm. Do I need to muster up some rabid rage and destruction, or should I try to upgrade? Late at night - upgrading the kernel is less work. Let's do that. What am I running, anyway?

*check* i386?!?! Hooboy...

*tinker* *tinker*

OK, let's see if it works...

Smoke, flames, screaming, menacing POST beeps and divers alarums.

Hmm... Maybe installing the graphics drivers would have been a good idea...

*fiddle* *clink* *screw* *bend* *inflate* *alter saddle*

It works! Yay! And there's actually a major performance boost too, not surprisingly. Outburst averted.

And I just want to thank Mr. Torvalds for creating an operating system about which I may use the phrase "Upgrading the kernel is less work" and mean it. :D

Er, yes. I'm assuming that was a joke :), but just to avoid confusion and such, an i386 kernel can run i686 code fine, as long as you've got a CPU capable of running it.

AMD64 is fine too, btw (and that Intel equivalent thingy), as long as you've got 32-bit support (if you don't know, you do). Not planning to do a 64-bit build right now. DROD doesn't really need that, so it'd just be silly. Cool, but silly.

Hum.

I dunno - I guess I could have needed the extra address space when DROD 2.0.14.1 just up and disappeared on me when I was importing my player file at home; Windows killed it because it had totally exhausted it's 2GB of address space... :lol

I'm glad we fixed that...but once you've beaten 500,000 rooms, I don't know if I'll be able to restructure the game to deal with importing that much data at once. Hopefully, though, at your pace, that's still a year or two down the road :P

Just a quick addition regarding female players...

Despite not contributing much to the forum, I think VodkaAndCoke ought to be mentioned as she's the highest ranked female in the male dominated world of DROD (despite not having played for 6 weeks or so recently). In fact, she's currently 20th.

She's also got a respectable amount of #1s and I will always remember the day she actually stole a couple from michthro in a much played hold! (and yeah, several from me but I don't want to talk about that).

But hey... now she's been mentioned, I'm happy :)

Not to dismiss VodkaAndCoke's achievements - which are substantial - I should point out that she's the second-highest ranked female player, given that Fratropea is ranked at #8.

I stand corrected. Didn't realise fratropea was indeed female. Congrats to fratropea! Certainly been enjoying our #1 battles in "Seasons".
