Does the transparent tar and mud mod work on Linux? I have it working on my Windows machine, but not my Linux machine. (And unfortunately, I've hit a room that really wants transparent tar, deep into a hold that I've been playing on a Linux box.)
Yes, it does. In fact, I made my tar mod on Linux.
One thing I noticed was that the files I downloaded had different capitalization: Transparent.bmp and transparent.tim. So one of the things I tried was lowercaseing Transparent.bmp and making sure that the line in drod.ini was lowercase also.
That is significant. It probably would not work with a case problem like that. (Most file systems used under Linux are case sensitive.)
Hmmm...interestingly enough, I note that the drod.ini in .caravel/drod-kdd-2_0 gets rewritten whenever I start DROD, and the General=transparent line is getting removed.
Yes the .ini file is rewritten whenever you run DROD. The fact that the line is removed suggests that it's not understanding your modification for some reason. I suggest checking little things....
[EDIT: Never mind...I figured it out. User error.]
Oh, well. Looks like this response is a day late and a dollar short. I guess I'll post it anyway. Maybe someone else will find it useful.

To clarify the stupid thing I was doing, I'd be sitting there looking at my DROD screen with opaque tar, making my modifications to drod.ini, and when I was done I would save them, exit from DROD and restart it.

Well, it turns out that DROD rewrites the drod.ini file when it exits. So each time I'd make the change, and each time it would just get blindly overwritten.

Much better now.

Can someone describe what I need to do to get this to work in TCB? Do I follow the same process as before?

Steve.

Change "General=General" to "General=General;Transparent" or whatever the name of your transparent mod is.

Isn't it time for a new mod for 3.0? Even if the 2.0 one works, Gel isn't covered...

Although I haven't read through the rest of the thread yet, thanks so much to the OP!

If it weren't for this post, I don't think I ever would have finished level 11 of KDD.

Onward! :thumbsup

here's a couple 2.0 cheats upgraded to 3.0.

the tarstuff graphics are based on AlefBet's public domain versions, not on caravel graphics.

install.txt in the zip file says how to make the drod.ini changes.

edit: removed an unpleasant grid effect from tarstuff

You know, my multi-cheat revealing thingy also works for TCB.
It reveals secret and crumbly walls, coloring secrets in yellow and crumblies in blue.

I am having a lot of trouble trying to install silver's transparent tar.

First, I close DROD TCB then, I edit the .ini file and change
General=Genral;transparenttar

Then I add the
transparenttar= transparenttar
Right underneath it.
But then when I open DROD again, and click 'continue game' and, it doesn't work. I'm finally getting around to adding this, but it's not working!

What am I doing wrong?

I recommend spelling "General" correctly. Also, the transparenttar=transparenttar line in unnecessary for a GeneralTiles mod.

the Data folder which contains drod.ini should also contain a folder called Bitmaps which has some title screens for the game in it. so you copy the .png files into there.

You are using a mac, right? ctrl-click on DROD-TCB and click Show Package Contents. Go then to Contents-Resources-Data-Bitmaps.

*bump*ish

Just wondering:
Are there any plans to extend this mod to include transparent gel? I haven't found a mod which also does this. Should hopefully be easy to adapt but I've got no artist skills to speak of, let alone dithering gfx software...

There's a transparent gel mod somewhere, because I have one. Unfortunately it means that I can't see tarstuff from the restore screen, so we could benefit from a new one.

I also have a tarstuff mod with all three types from _somewhere_.

It's within a file called "TCB_cheats.zip", along with a separate modification to make crumby walls more visible. The last modified date for the files is 19th April 2007. Have fun searching... because I don't remember where it is on the forum.

I'm not entirely sure the point was clear, but maybe I'm misunderstanding. The thread I linked to *is* a Transparency Mod, and doesn't require extra artwork: you just install it exactly the same as any other mod (unzip it to bitmaps directory, add a line to the INI). It has a different graphical style as a result and may not be to your taste, but it's certainly a complete TCB Tar/Mud/Gel transparency mod.

EDIT: Oh, and TCB_cheats.zip is in this very thread. Look for silver's post.

A graphical mod cannot affect DROD in any way, shape, or form. Maybe you should report exactly what happen on the Bugs board so that we can try and find out what went wrong and maybe recover your data (if you haven't deleted DROD already).

Why don't you give us specific examples of the files you're using, where you placed them, and what your drod.ini looks like. Otherwise, how can we troubleshoot this?
