I'm currently leaning toward removing this feature in 5.0.
I would actually ask for it to be removed from the next build of 4, unless this would be unduly hard or somehow controversial.

I have used this feature from time to time, because orthosquares aren't as distinctive as "force arrows, doors, or obstacles". At least, not until you light them up to check for any architect funny business.

That said, I have never run into the OP problem for a simple reason... I've always clicked on orthosquares that weren't any thing else special. Not because I was intentionally avoiding the problem, but because it seemed correct to not click on a plate when I wanted orthosquares.

And so I'd like to present another alternative: shadowing. Less important things like orthosquares would be overshadowed by any other feature on the square. Yes, this means that sometimes orthosquares might not be clickable at all, but that's livable... in many of those cases the orthosquares probably correspond directly to the features that overshadow them, making them effectively boosted in appearance already.

Just change will not interfere with other hits. How to make some of the key.

I've made this change (not highlighting ortho tiles when clicked on) for 5.0, and for the next build of 4.0.
