The triffid is a venomous plant. Its movements are similar to that of a roach, although they will also go after briar. When they come in contact with it they scatter seeds on all adjacent briar squares. Five turns later, these grow into triffids which proceed to multiply. Since they can only multiply on briar, their numbers are limited.

I haven't decided if stabbing them would destroy them or turn them into briar (like golems)

Destroy, since they can then re-grow from the briar, making horde killing impossible.

If you went the "turn into briar" route, you could always further restrict it by saying that only mature briar can turn into triffids, but killing them leaves immature briar behind.

Nope, it'll have to be destroy far to annoying otherwise.

Anyway, I sort of like this. It provides a new way to destroy briar. I think it might be a little to hard to manage, though.

Actually, I like TFMurphy's compromise, with only mature briar seedable. This is an interesting idea, though the name is probably copyrighted or something.
Maybe it could also grow in one or more tarstuff? Mud would make the most sense, but it would provide another way to remove Tar and Gel.

I imagine "Triffid" is copyright and even if it isn't anymore, it is too clearly associated with John Wyndham's novel.

I'm sure others will come up with potential names if this idea is adopted, but may I suggest "Olcweod".

Really? well, it is simply made from 2 existing words . . . which together give an appropriate meaning I think. :unsure

Ah right... that explains the difficulty level.
I had got as far as "lode cow", but didn't think that's what you meant somehow...

Triffids sound more... dangerous I guess ;)

Sorry! Paris knocked the stuffing out of me and I don't think my poor old brain has recovered yet!!

"Olc" means evil in Scottish Gaelic and "Woed" is the OE word from which we get weed. I would pronouce it "awlk-wo-uhd"with the stress on the first syllable.

I don't think you can copyright a single word, though you can trademark it if it's not in common use.

That sounds surprisingly similar to "awkward", actually... ;)

Who cares about old English and other weird languages about a copyrighted name, when you can just search for another name! It's a lot simpler and much, much easier to pronounce.

If not, then keep looking in ancient dictionaries (is this how you say it?) and other tomes of pronunciation. Sorry if it sounds aggressive, but I just got to make a point.

Yeah, uh, what point is that? You didn't especially make it very clearly. Why shouldn't we look to Old English for the names of new monsters (like, say, the Aumtlich)?

Speaking as a professional, I very much care about Old English and "other weird languages". (I don't much like the name "olcweod" itself, as it happens, but not because it's--gasp!--from another language. How about "orcweed"?)

Ok, ok, I'm sorry. Who cares is not a good term. But did it say that you should not add who cares? I don't think it's very good either. Though there are still many words in the today languages that would suffice.

No, it has a 10 foot reach. (Are you and I playing the same game, because I play D&D) So that's 2 squares.
