Quick background: The nightstands we have at our cottage are too short for a new bed we bought. As a hobby, my husband makes furniture (among other really neat things) and he said he'd make us new nightstands. This was over a year ago. Cobbler's children, right?
A few weeks ago, his parents -- who are always trying to give us their old furniture even though we have totally different taste, not to mention the fact that we're not exactly newlyweds and our home and cottage have been fully furnished probably for longer than some people on this forum have been alive-- uh, where was I? Oh yes. A few weeks ago, my mother-in-law offered us this side table, which I think is hideous. But! It's exactly the right height for a nightstand for our bed. A plan starts to form.
I tell Dave, let's take it. A little paint and it'll be fine. He's thinking I'm going to paint it like I did this other table we have up here -- sort of "
cottage chic."
But my plan is to let me have some fun, while ultimately getting him to make the tables I really want. Muhahaha. See, I have a soft spot for the wacky and the weird, but Dave usually thinks my "
treasures"
are "
disturbing"
and so they often get relegated to obscure corners of the house. Hey, some people like skeletons and gargoyles.
So after many hours (mostly waiting for paint to dry before I can work on another layer or touchups) here is the table:

Luckily -- even though it's nowhere perfect -- I quite like the result, because my plan backfired. Dave really likes it. At least he says so. He may just be doubling down on my bluff. Hmm, probably should have gone for disturbing instead of wacky, but I was so sure the eyeball would creep him out.
tl;dr: I painted a table.
