Currently, incomplete rooms have their 'floor' tiles change colour in the minimap. This was fine back in KDD, but these days it's common to have rooms that don't have very many floor tiles at all.

Here's what I suggest: incomplete rooms have an alpha-blended red filter laid over them, so the entire room takes on a red tint and the incomplete rooms stand out. Unrequired rooms would have a similar effect, but purple.

Agreed... following on from my recent proposal, I think it would also be good that information such as this should also be made available by right-clicking rooms on the minimap...

I know simple bumping isn't as productive as new requests, but I very much think this should be looked into.

Another option would be to change more things. for example, the color of the F7 counter, the background of the portrait, or the black border of the game area.

Hm. Changing the F7 counter would require going to the room rather than looking at it on the map--but there is in fact something appealing about being able to glance at the counter to remind yourself whether or not you need to be optimizing. :-)

Here's an extension idea to this - allow custom images to be overlaid. Just draw an arbitrary PNG on top of the target image; it can be semitransparent or whatever. There can be an X for uncleared, a checkmark for cleared (remember this is only after you immediately cleared it), and another image for optional. And you can make the image customizable so that anyone can edit it if they don't like it.
