The backronym. It's a surprisingly common way to give a word that's been plucked out of thin air, or had a meaning that's a grounding in reality, a history, an etymology. Many curse words are given a backronym etymology, as are many software products.

DROD actually has an acronym etymology, but now that Beethro sheathes his sword and engages in cutscenes, not every room these days is filled with deadly death. And so: alternate acronyms. Backronyms. Plus, heck, it's easy and fun.

As always, if your entry made it through the leagues and is on this list, please vote it a 10. Please also refrain from voting nearly everyone a 1, because it hurts you a lot more than it hurts everyone else when we take away your 10.

This is the final round of voting: after time is up, I'll announce the winners of the main competition, and the winner of the speed prize.

AFAIK, the very first room in Webfoot contained no deadly death.

Indeed, but there are increasingly few rooms filled with deadly death these days, particularly in TCB, which contains several levels without deadly death. (And some with only hurty death.)

We have winners!

The speed prize of 25 rank points goes to Alneyan, with his entry "Danger! Rabid Optimizers on Duty". In hindsight, I probably should have made the requirements 5+ instead of 7+ to keep with the spirit of the prize; this was also the third place winner, but it was still one of the first entrants so it's not too bad.

The second place winner is RoboBob3000 with "Debilitating Reminders of Own Dumbness"!

The first place winner is Erik Hermansen with "Deadly Rooms of Death"!Briareos with "Down. Right. Oops! Dead."!

Congratulations!

...Yeah, I couldn't think of any acronyms for 'winners'.

Oh my... do we have to hold an acceptance speech or something like that now? :look 'cause I totally suck at those...

But congratulations to the other winners nonetheless. :)

Also, I take it that odd "Deadly Rooms Of Death" option was a last-minute entry from Erik? :lol

Agreed; the speed bonus was supposed to be for 'mediocre' entries, but very few entries actually came anywhere near the 7 mark (I know I barely made it). Well, I guess it could also mean that all entries bar one were mediocre, but.

I'd like to thank voters #45 and #46, who gave me third place and broke my tie with "Diabolical Riddles of the Deep". I also acknowledge Briaeros' victory; after steamrolling through the Azure league, he then proceeded to pick up some more steam in the grand mêlée, leaving all the other entries dead in the water, the original DROD included. Looks like a clear mandate from the people.

(Two mistakes in a post! Not bad at all.)

So what's the first price then?

A signed copy of "Down. Right. Oops! Dead.: The City Beneath"? :D

(Also, <nitpick>it's "Briareos", like a concatenation of one of the most hated elements of TCB and a camera from Canon...</nitpick>)

No, you were tied with 'The Dreadful Realm of Determinism' until the last two voters piled in. Ah well, win some lose some... I certainly think the best three won, with Briareos' entry the simplest, funniest and most apt (although perhaps 'Dungeon Roach Obsessive Disorder' deserved better).

Deadly Rooms of Death is one I threw in to see how it'd do. Seeing as it just broke 7, the speed prize was hella low. The first entry in was "Depression. Rage! ...oh. Duh." which, had I been more generous with the speed prize, would have got it.

I was also going to make this a 'vote for your favourite', which would expose this contest's Acrophobia roots even more transparently - I didn't because I didn't think that anyone other than the players would vote.

All right, the dubious honor of knowing that I would have won a prize under different circumstances! :P

I'm happy that my three favorite entries won. Interestingly, they all described the player's experience of the game, rather than directly describing the game itself, as most entries did. (Nothing about Roaches or Riddles was destined to win, apparently.)

I also really liked "Daily Ritual of Opensource Delving" as an encapsulation of the whole experience and "Delver Repels Organisms Downstairs," which sounds like a comically understated newspaper headline.

The winning entry was by far the most clever and entertaining; I had it pegged as the winner from the beginning. You have to admit, though, that it could serve as a fitting title for innumerable other games as well - basically any game where you can both move and die. That didn't stop me voting it a 10, though. It did what I was trying to do (tell a short story with a comical twist in four words) much more concisely and effectively. Congrats, Briareos!

Woot to second-placeness!

My personal favorite was Daily Ritual of Opensource Delving, despite the fact that I penalized entries containing prominent in-game words, such as roach, delver, dungeon, deadly, and death, mostly because they were low-hanging fruit. I also thought it was funny how many entries stuck to "Adjective Plural-noun of Optional-adjective Noun," including my own.

We won't get to see the odometer roll over, but this'll kick me over 1000 rank points! Out with the silly hats!

Of course, it might have helped if I'd actually voted and given myself a 10 like I was supposed to. <shrug>

Point. Considering that I didn't vote in the other 4 polls either, I guess I didn't do so bad.

Thanks. I've had one registration and no posts on the site I set up, so I was worried that interest might be fading. But work continues, which is why I haven't been posting much.
