El Goonish Shive - Sort of like a humorous fantasy sci-fi soap opera. I'm linking directly to the newbie page, because today's comic probably spoils stuff that happened earlier. Like other webcomics, the art gets much better after a while, but you're better off reading through the whole thing.

OotS and Erfworld are great, plus I love (the oft-mentioned-on-here) xkcd and Shannon Wheeler's Too Much Coffee Man (and How to be Happy).

I would reccomend Megatokyo, even though Matt said it was long (which it is with 900+ comics), but I have been following it since it all started.

I'm surprised neither Super Mega Comics, SMBC, nor Aldus Maycombe have been suggested yet. I'm guilty of checking more than just the three more often than their update schedules would suggest, but these are ones I haven't seen here yet.

"Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire" is pretty good, if you can stand the pun-ishment.

http://www.dominic-deegan.com/view.php?date=2002-05-21

This is a link to the first comic in the archives, since the latest comic is shown right on the main page. Don't worry, the artwork improves a lot as time goes on.

Here's several for those of you into video game sprite comics:

----------------------------------------------------------------

Chrono Trigger Rip-off: Protagonists from the end of Chrono Trigger are transported to the beginning of Final Fantasy 4 (2 U.S.). Of course, that game wasn't designed to handle such high-powered PCs at such an early stage, but surely our heroes wouldn't risk tampering with the natural order of things... Would they?

Oh, hell yes, they would.

Long-since discontinued, but funny while it lasted. Takes a few strips to get going, though.

http://llv.comicgenesis.com/d/20010627.html

----------------------------------------------------------------

Metroid Third Derivative: Samus Aran finds herself on yet another planet full of hostiles, and once again has managed to lose nearly all her previously possessed powers. Seriously, you'd think the girl would've learned to invest in back-up systems by now.

Worth it just to see our heroine end up friends (okay, reluctant allies anyway) with a space pirate and a metroid, of all creatures...

http://www.bobandgeorge.com/Subcomics/Metroid/index.php?page=1

----------------------------------------------------------------

Captain SNES: A loser from the real world finds himself made the "champion" - if that title can be applied to a guy like this - of Videoland, an alternate universe composed of SNES, NES and Gameboy games. Fortunately somebody gave him a 30-megawatt plasma cannon, so every now and then he gets to actually back up his attitude problem. Unfortunately, nobody's given him back his pants...

...Or the instruction manual...

http://www.captainsnes.com/?date=20010710

----------------------------------------------------------------

Secret of Mana Theatre: An interesting twist on sprite comics, this one is actually a series of fully animated sprite movies (complete with sound). Based on the old SNES game Secret of Mana, as the name implies.

This one's been stalled for some time, though, and may or may not be coming back.

EDIT: Just checked, it's coming back.

I've wobbled around various webcomics, but the only one I consistently check is Penny Arcade because a) Tycho's posts are entertaining and often point me to exciting goodness I had not previously encountered, particularly in the realm of videogames, and b) no continuity. Or very little, anyway. Plus they're very good about updating on schedule (unsurprising, as it's their sole source of income), and I find them consistently amusing.

It's not that I'm against continuity, whether humorous or serious. But if someone's telling a story, I want it in big chunks, not a few panels at a time. Now that Megatokyo's being published in manga format I follow those, for example. And I'm very fond of the couple of Order of the Stick books that are out now. But I won't even buy comics in single issue form, and that's 20+ pages worth of story at a time. Most webcomics, it's maybe a page a week. If that. Can't take it.

I did follow Bob the Angry Flower fairly regularly but when he switched the layout the humor mysteriously evaporated, at least for me. Why this should be, I don't know.

Webcomics I have purchased stuff from:

Dinosaur Comics, Order of the Stick, Penny Arcade, Sluggy Freelance, Scary Go Round.

If you extend the definition of "webcomics", throw in Homestar Runner and Red vs Blue (actually, remind me to post to the prize pile at some point)

If you extend the definition of "I", throw in Piled Higher and Deeper.

Other comics that I enjoy but have yet to make money from me include Diesel Sweeties, Goats, Wigu, 8-bit theatre, Overcompensating, Perry Bible Fellowship, xkcd, Questionable Content.

UG Madness. It's a Magic: the Gathering webcomic that usually talks about recent events in Magic. Often quite funny. Sometimes a bit rude.

These haven't been mentioned yet. I'm too lazy to write out content advisories, so just don't go to any of these if you can't handle "bad words", geekiness, depression, innuendo, and/or shamelessness.

I have way too many webcomics in my bookmarks which I check almost daily. Among my favorites that I don't believe have been mentioned yet:

Breakfast of the Gods
Click here to view the secret text

Only funny if you have a knowledge of cereal mascots. Or if you at least recognize some of them.

Tales of the Questor
Click here to view the secret text

If you can read past the first five pages, you'll find a very engaging story. A very nice fantasy comic.

A Modest Destiny
Click here to view the secret text

Another very engaging story. It gets really good after the first chapeter.

My favorite webcomics are as follows (and boy am I glad I used that handy dandy search function before making a new thread). :D

http://www.bohemiandrive.com/comics/npwil.html
weird, and updated infrequently... but still quite fun.

http://thenoobcomic.com/index.html
an amusing "let's make fun of mmorpgs" comic.

http://goats.com/
this comic is perhaps the strangest one I've ever read. The current story arc involves a talking broccoli. however, I bought the only t-shirt I've ever bought online here: http://goats.com/store/item/tshirt_wishes-text-hanes-1.html

http://drmcninja.com/
a doctor, AND A NINJA! this comic is made of EPIC WIN.

http://www.fartparty.org/
<3

http://www.thebookofbiff.com/
biff learns all the wrong lessons all the time. It makes me feel so much more intelligent!

http://www.alienlovespredator.com/
Alien loves predator doesn't update on a regular schedule anymore. :( but, the archives are WELL worth reading. I got quite a few hard laughs from it.

http://www.lucid-tv.com/index.html
this reminds me of perry bible fellowship... and it updates more often! It can be amusing, but it can be pretty twisted too.

http://www.somethingpositive.net/
I FINALLY caught up on the archive for this comic. I spent a good 2 weeks reading everything, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

these have already been mentioned but... they're quite awesome:

Well, I'm not sure if "I just read all 60 strips in one go" counts as "favourite", but meh - Minus really put a smile on my face (well, except for the darker bits)... :)

np: Clint Mansell - Superhumans And Monsters (Doom OST)

Simple: they're not very good.

Although I like Arbuckle, which is Garfield from Jon's point of view. Essentially, you scrub out Garfield's thought balloons and see what happens, and it's amazing how well it works.

Not really a webcomic in a sense that it's not updated weekly or anything. (It's from 20's !) But a lof of it is available on a page.

Krazy Kat
It's about a cat of indefinite gender, a dog and a mouse which has very impressive aim with bricks.
Prepare for occassional extremely mutilated english (lengwidge = language ) and watch the landscapes !

College Roomies From Hell deserves some recognition, although the current page is a cliffhanger (of which the content is fairly easily guessable, though probably not the full scope without reading the rest of the storyline/the forum reactions). At first, it was more or less an average college-age 'life' comic, but then came the tentacle arm, eye lasers, werecoyotes, and blue mushroom trips to spice up the wackiness, and later threats of the Apocalypse and regular appearances by Satan to add to the dramatic/serious potential. Could be justifiably accused of tuning up the serious too much at times after introducing it as an option (and with the 3 strip a week model, this can understandably drag after a while) but I find it enjoyable and very worthwhile. Plus, it's pretty, and well-written.

While I'm at it I'll second the recommendations for Questionable Content, which I also recently checked out. A bit emo at times, but you've got Pintsize and Dora to make up for it. Why don't we have more sapient robots and honest women around?
