If place stairs and press "cancel" while asked where it leads, stairs are still placed.

Ah, I see what you're saying. That dialog comes up by default to ask the player where the stairs lead. Cancelling the dialog just cancels changing the stair destination, not placing the stairs. Same with a scroll, I believe: when you place it and then cancel writing text, that doesn't delete the scroll. It just cancels the text editing operation. If Erik wants to change it in the future, we'll do it, but we decided to make it this way a few build ago and I'm inclined to leave it.

One option to make things clearer is to gray out the cancel button for the initial placement of the stairs.

I think that would be a good idea if you want to keep the current behavior (which makes sense, since most items cannot be cancelled).
