Welcome to the RPG Holds board! Here you will find finished user-made holds to play. After downloading a hold, it can be imported via the Change Location screen in-game. Subscribers to CaravelNet can download them directly from inside the game.
You can also use the
RPG hold downloads page for a more convenient way to find holds published to this board.
There is a very similar post to this one in the classic DROD Holds board, which you can read
here. This is required reading. The process is very similar for the RPG Holds board and so rather than repeat myself and have to make updates in two places, this post will instead list all of the differences to the classic DROD post:
How to submit your hold
Submitting an RPG hold follows an identical process to submitting one for classic DROD, except RPG has its own separate
RPG Architecture board.
HA Review
It is not possible to produce watchable demos for DROD RPG, so if your hold is hard we might instead ask you to write us a walkthrough. How detailed this will need to be depends on your hold. You can speed up the process by writing one in advance, if you think we might need one. Note we need to obtain every scorepoint and find every hidden room as part of the review process.
Please be extra careful about making changes during the HA process. A small change in an RPG hold can have a significant cascading effect across the rest of the hold, and will often necessitate your reviewer start again. We will be mad if we have to keep replaying your hold, so please ensure you're confident you are done before submitting.
Hard Rules
Many of these rules are the same for RPG, with one change and an addition:
4)
Your hold must be completable, and every hidden room and scorepoint must be reachable. You need to have a reachable staircase or script command that triggers the end game screen. Progress tracking on CaravelNet requires this to mark it as completed. All hidden rooms need to be reachable so the player can get 100% in-game, but
they do not have to all be reachable in the same playthrough. The same is true for scorepoints. We need to be able to reach them all, but it's OK if you have to start again to reach one. On that note,
there must be at least one scorepoint. Holds with no scorepoints are not allowed. It is OK to not have any hidden rooms.
5)
No unbounded score increases. With scripting it is possible to generate more scorable resources like keys or stats. If it is possible to "
infinitely"
generate these, then the optimal play to get a highscore will be to repeat this process over and over until the player reaches the score cap. This will destroy any possible fun for the leaderboards. We take a closer look at scripting when reviewing an RPG hold and are on the lookout for situations like this.
Guidelines
Guidline #1, backtracking issues, does not apply to DROD RPG, as the game is fundamentally all about allowing the player to softlock themselves into an unwinnable position.
What constitutes a scripting issue is slightly different, we covered one above with the rule about unbounded scores, but the premise is the same.
Updating your hold after promotion
Updating an RPG hold once it's made it onto the RPG Holds board is potentially even worse than it is for classic DROD because of the cascading effect changes have. Changing something in one room could impact or invalidate scores across the entire hold. As such, we are even more resistant to making changes after promotion for RPG. Please ensure you really do consider the hold final before submitting it to us.
