Hi drodfolks,

I have been playing through Descent of King Hesper, using Mac version 5.1.1.624. I had reached a level named
Click here to view the secret text
which is where I stopped playing on the evening of February 13, 2025. Something happened overnight where the next day, I could no longer restore my progress when launching the game.

I tried restoring a backup of my "/Users/user/Library/Application Support/Caravel/drod-5_0/" directory and was able to keep playing for a bit, redoing some rooms where I lost progress.
But shortly afterward, the problem happened again: the player file reverted progress to the beginning of the hold and the Restore command no longer worked in any of the holds.

I tried deleting the drod-5_0 directory and downloading the hold from scratch, then importing my player file which I had exported when things were working. The application now crashes whenever trying to import the .player file (or even just the .player saves file).

I'd like to ask the community if someone could DM me a player file that includes progress on everything in DKH up to the level which is in secret tags above. I don't think I would have any alternative at this point, other than to restart progress from the beginning which would be months of rework.

Thanks in advance!

What happens if you import your last good player profile in 5.1.0?

I'm only in chapter 6 in TDoKH, would that help? (You'd have to redo about a chapter's worth of rooms)

I have one that's cleared a few rooms in one level in chapter 7, and have much less collectibles than you do. But I'm willing to share it if it'll help.

I'm on

NoahT was kind enough to send me his player file, but unfortunately I wasn't able to import it. The problem was the same as when I'd tried to import my own player file earlier.

Attempt 1:
- Used my existing Mac version 5.1.1.624.
- Deleted everything from the /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Caravel/ directory
- Ran the game, created a new player profile
- Connected to CaravelNet in the settings
- Downloaded The Descent of King Hesper successfully from CNet
- Imported the player file

This caused the game to crash (unexpectedly and suddenly exit) during the "Checking saved game integrity" phase, which is something Noah had also reported happening on his end. The result was that no progress was shown in the hold.

Attempt 2:
- Downloaded a fresh copy of Mac version 5.1.1.550 from the Downloads page.
- Deleted everything from the /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Caravel/ directory
- Ran the game, created a new player profile (after approving the game as a valid executable in macOS System Settings -> Privacy & Security)
- Connected to CaravelNet in the settings (had to relaunch once to get this to connect)
- Downloaded The Descent of King Hesper successfully from CNet
- Imported the player file

Same crash during the "Checking saved game integrity" phase. The result was that no progress was shown in the hold.

I am running macOS Sonoma 15.3.1. For my next attempt, I'll be trying to import the player profile into the Windows version of DROD running in a VM.

Attempt 3:
This is the error I received when attempting to import the player file in the Windows version (5.1.0.6512, running on Windows 11 ARM).

Attempt 4:
Tried again with the Windows version 5.1.1.624. I had to install a Visual C++ Runtime for x86 package before this version would launch. This time I had more luck, and I was able to import both my own and Noah's player file (although I did hear some error beeps during the import process).

Perhaps this points to lingering platform-specific issues in the player validation handling code.

But the good news is that I was able to get close to the point where I left off, plus or minus a few rooms. Thanks everyone! (The unfortunate part is needing to play in a Windows VM for the time being).
Fingers crossed that the save state corruption doesn't happen again.
