Hi,

I can tell it's obvious where I need to put the rock golems after trying a couple of times, and it's nice and symmetrical too, but the only question is "how?"

As soon as I go either up or down after pressing the plate, the roaches will always occupy the spots the rock golems are supposed to go on, and then the rock golems end up getting fried before all of the roaches, with no way to kill the remaining roaches.

Perhaps the symmetry is misleading.

But if I do it for only one side like you suggest, then the problem happens on the other side as well - the rock golems will block the roaches if I place them besides one specific spot, on both sides - and although the symmetry is a coincidence if I had to guess, no other locations will work - the rock golem will end up blocking a roach any other choices you make for both sides.

This one is a bit tricky to give hints for without spoiling the linchpin. You need to think outside the box.

I know that too, but my point was moving away from the pressure plate to turn off the arrows either north or south ends up with a roach occupying the spot the golem needs to be in - any other location simply doesn't work, and I know by testing each location painstakingly and seeing how any other locations end up with a rock pile blocking the hot tile.

In the context of this room, your hint doesn't even make any sense, focusing on the west side there aren't any actual other directions you can go, because you can't go right because of the door, and you can't go left and have the monsters move in any meaningful way, you can only manipulate the monsters by going up or down, full story.

Silly me! Why didn't I think of that linchpin?

Brilliant as all the other rooms are.

...except before my first golem can get trapped, a roach ends up taking its place regardless of which direction I start in, due to movement order as well as just how the roaches are placed in front of the golem.

What do I do now?

Oh... I thought the room isn't solvable with a roach on either of the two innermost arrows, but I was wrong about that conclusion? Good to know.

Actually, I still think that's the right conclusion, because of the design of the room the plate won't open until all the monsters are past the arrows, at which point it's physically impossible to manipulate them anymore, so it's not like you can make one of the roaches who occupies one of the innermost chambers go back to give room for the golem to get first, and this applies to both chambers.

Time for a complete spoiler -- in stages, so you can choose how much of it to reveal.

Ah-ha! Now I understand - I was assuming something about the very last part when you clear the room. This makes the trick solution even more brilliant compared to the more obvious stuff you saw elsewhere in the level.
