Now I have completed the game in all variants. However, I'll have to play it yet once as a Warrior because I realised pretty much at the end that you can switch weapons if you have more that one. OK, it will be useful for sure, but the real question is: can you switch weapon DURING the test in bone cave? It would be useful to fight different opponents with the most suitable weapon, but the duels progress one after another, so I can't access menu at that time...

Would it even make sense once a warrior has aquired Balmung? Is any of the mundane weapons better than Balmung against a specific foe?

Yes, actually. The notion that certain creatures are more vulnerable to certain weapon types remain relevant. It should not surprise you that a flaming sword is not the best weapon to use against a fire giant
