That at least I had spotted that in the thread, and I have subsequently been exiting the puzzle screen after each attempt, I believe.

I could still really use a hint as to my goal in the puzzle, if someone has one, please -- I really am stuck on this one (but again, would prefer to at least partially solve it myself than to simply read the answer further up the thread). :/

Warrior character, I've gotten to the room with all of the crystals, and the small blue crystal you should be able to pick up.

How do you pick up the small blue crystal? And is there something I should be doing in this room? Seems like a dead end?

Nevermind, got the blue crystal. But still stuck at this cave, can't find anywhere else to go, or anything to do in the crystal room.

there's something else can be done at crystal cave, and after a fight, you can do something to it's corpse too ...
that's all, after that retrack your step and find another way ...

You can always come back to the cave later.

The exit is at the bottom left of the room.

I burnt the crystal and can't go back with the saved game.

Is there something I will not be able to do? Can I get another nice crystal?

No, it's not going to lock you out of any quests. And that's the only crystal.

Guys I am also stuck with items, I need flowers for lovers to get vouches for eye, and I got gloves from eitri already and used them for something else, I tried to exchange them back for flowers but cant, what other items can I give him for flowers?

Yes, you will be able to rescue Heime.

You'll just have to fight Skrymir.

I’m at that point in the game with a sorceress who knows the Shadow spell - however when she casts it right after entering the cave Skrymir ignores the Shadow, when I move her a step closer to him he still ignores the newly cast shadow and when I step too close he attacks... Is that simply a matter of finding the exact distance that he notices the shadow or do I miss something else there?

Edit: Problem solved - I just needed a higher level of Shadow...
