hai gaise

I was getting sick of each successive version of Windows giving me less control over my machine. I was also thinking that I needed to dabble in more OSes if I really were to deserve my self-proclaimed title as a "geek." So yesterday, I finally jumped on the Linux bandwagon. I shrunk the drive Windows 7 was on in my laptop, and created a new partition on which to install Ubuntu 9.10.

Following somewhat of a personal tradition, after I got a handle on customizing it and working with it, the very first game I would try installing on Ubuntu would be a DROD game. This time, it would be AE.

Something was off about the name input screen. The open space around the window wasn't black... I could almost make out my dark green gradient background behind it.

So I opened Appearance Preferences to mess around with my background for further investigation. And I must say, things got pretty interesting before I even changed a thing.

DROD is the application on top in that screenshot, by the way.

So... is this normal?
It's like it's in some sort of RGB value addition display mode. The darker a color is, the more transparent it is.
I don't remember hearing about anything like this during the time I was a regular, so I'm really surprised.

EDIT: In case anyone is wondering, I did switch the topic title and description.

Syntax's suggestion in that thread worked. Now I no longer need to keep everything out from under DROD just for it to be playable.

Try disabling Compiz... I think it's under System -> Preferences -> Apperance and select the first option (no effects).

Unfortunately it disabled a lot of effects I do like. The switch also unexpectedly moved every window to the first workspace despite there still being four. Guess I'll have to switch back and forth and bear with it.

Oh, but wait! This is Linux! When something doesn't work your way, there's config files! Extensions! Scripts!

Maybe I'll look into that stuff later.

I still do wonder why this occurs. What visual effect is causing this unintuitive display behavior?

Glad you made the switch to a decent OS :)

I'm running Karmic too now and DROD runs fine with Compiz enabled (on "Extra" setting in Preferences -> Appearance) so it could be a driver issue. What gfx card have you got?

No idea which exactly causes it, however... You can run this as script:
metacity --replace && /path/to/drod/file/ && compiz --replace

Basically, it should disable Compiz as long as DROD is running.

You could even go one step further and edit the drod-tcb or drod-rpg-tt script to do this.
