This post should do for the rule, I think. I have been known to scare folks with the fact that I can do this when I talk: and at a quick rate, too, not just with a pause here and a pause there while I stop to think (and count).

This first came up at a friend's house, if I'm right, when we were asked to say what we did as work, in a way that kept to this rule. For those like me in grad school (or for the prof who was there), whose work is at a high tier of thought, this was no mean feat, but I think I pulled it off.

Good job to all three of you! I guess the first to get it gets to put the next one up. I used to talk like this from time to time back in high school, and yeah, I was quite good at it. It's great how you can need to find words that are quite "high tier", as you put it, just to keep to the rule. Here's a last thing: Can you say what the rule IS but not break it as you do? I still can't come up with a good way.

This will be my last post to keep to the rule, by the way :)

When you say a word, you may only have one sound in it. No words with two sounds, those are too long.

Each word must be, when said, just one sound with not one pause in it.
(Well, something like that. Heh. By the way, you may be interested in bumping the The Invisible Rule thread on the second page of forum games.. ;))

"Sound" is not quite what you want: "want" has four sounds in it. You might want to say "words of no more than one piece of the kind that can bear stress", but then, I am a, er, thing. You know. A prof who works with words, starts with "ling", ends with "uist"...

OK, enough of that. I came here to post a puzzle. And, well, 'cause this is the way I think, this is the puzzle you get:

The answer to each numbered clue (lengths indicated by the number in parentheses after the clue) can be matched to the answer of one of the unnumbered clues. This matching involves rearranging the letters in the numbered clue's answer...well, most of the letters, anyway. It should be pretty clear which ones drop out.

The unnumbered clues are in alphabetical order by answer.

Once you've matched them all, you should be able to answer the following question: Which element of this game do I seem to have the most difficulty with?

Numbered clues:
1. A young child, especially one just starting to walk (7)
2. Marvin was a paranoid one (7)
3. Oscar-winning director of "Ordinary People" (7)
4. Its center is worth 50 points (9)
5. Place where ships may get repaired (8)
6. Apocalyptic battle between good and evil (10)
7. In the middle of; enveloped (10)
8. American Express customer, for instance (10)
9. Person who sets betting probabilities (9)

Unnumbered clues:
Singer DiFranco; Radio personality Casey; Allow; Oversee employees; Capital of Morocco; Friend of Chandler and Phoebe; Zebra on a football field, for short; Without certainty; Chatter at length (variant spelling)

I hope this works. It might require group brainstorming (or hinting, or rewriting, or replacing...)

Sorry for being so quick, I knew I'd be racing against some of the other puzzle-hunt fans here on this forum (robobob, michthro, etc) :) Would have taken ages to make up, and I solve it in seconds.. ah well. We need another one of those puzzle-hunts to work on.

Very clever. Now I know the answer I can see how it works, but I wouldn't have got it myself. Really nice puzzle, Tahnan.

There has not been a puzzle for a while, so let me share a very nice riddle with you guys:

Not a gemstone from the mine or shovel digging there,
Not a form of currency or thief’s edge’d slayer,
Not a vessel of drunkery or of sentimental care,
Not a sign of devilry to conjure from thin air.
A common friend, am I, who detests shedding blood,
Still I usher them the same with sickly, crunching thud.

Well, just in the interest of keeping things going: I'm afraid it's not DROD-related, but, hey.

What we have here are clues to all members of a complete set, except for seven members. Well, OK, not a complete set, not yet. It's seven short of a complete set right now. And, actually, these aren't clues to the members anyway--each answer is also short a letter. And anagrammed. I couldn't make it easy on you, could I?

Take the first letters of the seven missing elements (not the nonexistent ones, of course, just the ones missing here), shift each one back a letter in the alphabet, and arrange to form a seven-letter word, which is the answer.

Get out of jail (but not free)
Desert ruminant
Knit with a single needle
Argued
Mislead
"___ Abbas" (Orff title; 2 wds.)
Baleen's meal
Ready for eating
Twenty
Doddering
Before long
Expands or puffs up

It'll probably only last fifteen minutes before someone solves it, again, but perhaps it'll entertain a few people?

What would be a good 3 letter solution to the clue:
"Angle bisector, perhaps"?

I was thinking "arc", but arcs don't bisect anything...

There was a puzzle posted here about an hour ago, but it was deleted almost straight away. I hope it comes back, because I'm very stuck! :)

Whoops, I took it down, but I can put it back if people actually are going to solve it. I just questioned if this was the right place for it.

The puzzle is called HytoFry. It's one in a series of eight I'm working on. I'd appreciate feedback. The directions of the puzzle are for you to figure out. The answer is one word.

If anyone wants me to list-check their clue answers, you can post here, I guess, or even quicker, e-mail me at handelman@gmail.com

Sorry for the confusion.

	3 4 5
--------------------------------	--------------------------- ---------------------------------
Angle bisector, perhaps Actor Epps Baskervilles haunter
Casual headwear Cradle rocker? Cooked in oil or fat
Dangerous cigarette additive Depend (on) Doctor #4's apparel
Foot of lion or bear Falco of "The Sopranos" Equivalent (with) (two words)
G-man Mulder Glass part of window Freezing rain
Herring hue? "I Walk the Line" singer Gather, like troops
Logo of CBS Killed, as a dragon Hereditary social system
Outlaw Ooze Lug clumsily (oy!)
Pat lightly Persia, once Mad
Scatter seed Quite a bad cut Proclamation or decree
Thurmond or Lieberman, for short Strike line crosser Opposite of piano
Ugly, old woman Thirty-eighth president Susceptible (to)
Woman's leg, slangily Went on the lam Wayne's World character

EDIT #1: CHANGE "MAD" TO "ANGRY". It's clearer that way.

I don't know how this thread works - whether we're competing to see who solves it first or collaborating to solve it together.

I have a bunch of probable answers to each of the clues, but can't see what to do with them.

Shall I post my answers?

My advice? Solve as many as you can first, worry about what they have to do with each other afterwards.

I WILL tell anyone if their answers are wrong if they e-mail or PM me.

I guess it would be nice if any discussion/clues were made in the forum as opposed to direct messaging. That way, the playing field is level for all of us...

True...although Tahnan already sent me the answer to the puzzle by e-mail last night. I guess I'll keep the puzzle open until he posts an answer to it here.
