It's not so much a platform thing as an international thing. Where Alt Gr exists, it replaces the right-hand Alt key on a US keyboard. It's only needed on keyboard layouts where you have lots of symbols on each key.

Alt+Shift ? ™  ‹  ›  ?  ?  ‡  °  ·  ‚  —  ±

I'll just be jumping in with the American version of that... (and adding the appropriate monospace code to fix the spacing, that's why it looks different if you wonder, Elfstone ;) )

Same line order as Elfstone's, but on a US keyboard.

` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - =
~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ +
` ‘ ™ £ ’ ? § Ά • ͺ Ί – ?
` ? € ‹ › ? ? ‡ ° · ‚ — ±

Some of that's not registering properly with what it does; alt and ` creates an accent mark if you give it a vowel next (ΰθμςω), and some rather odd things got replaced with ? in the list there, possibly because the forum might not quite know what to do with them.

Ahhhhh, now that's what I was trying to do. How did you get it all lined up? What is 'monospace code'?

Elf.

Ah, I did actually know the Americans called # a pound sign - not that I can think why... but yes, I meant £.
The other UK/US difference seems to be that shift-apostrophe gives @, and shift-2 gives ". Hmmm. Can't understand why they made that different, really.

Ouch! Don't forget shift-` gives the very useful ¬ character!

There are others too.

I know the American keyboard layout offheart, even though I only use a UK printed keyboard layout... Too many years having to use obscure systems and finding that their console is not set up to the UK keyboard format, even though the keyboard IS a uk printed keyboard... Bleugh!

Note how the left-shift-key and Enter key sizes are different just to accomodate the different location of the "| \" key!

When in doubt, quote. (It lets you see the tags that they used)

The tag in question is {code}.

What coppro said on the 'how'; the 'what' didn't get explained, though...

Monospace fonts are fonts where every character is the same width, taking up the same amount of space. If you've ever worked on a commandline, say in MS-DOS or something, or if you ever look at .txt files in your browser, you've seen those before. Using the {code}{/code} BBcode in your message (except with square brackets instead of curvy ones) will force all characters to go into an appropriate font (usually some form of Courier, I think), and then everything lines up all nice. ^^

Just a quick visual example:

abcdefghijklm
nopqrstuvwxyz
ABCDEFGHIJKLM
NOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklm
nopqrstuvwxyz
ABCDEFGHIJKLM
NOPQRSTUVWXYZ

What I meant was that I haven't a clue what "If you've ever worked on a commandline, say in MS-DOS or something, " means! :w00t

Well I've been using them for 10 years at work but only six years at home. It has always been Macs though - I was advised to get one at work and have never had any reason to regret it. I have used PCs from time to time - perforce at work - but I find them a bit clunky.

To any aliens landing and reading this thread (and many others):

When they say "PC" they mean "PC running Windows"

Whilst the PC design suffers from mucho legacy problems (not so much these days though) the 'clunkyness' your complaints are mostly OS not hardware related.

We now return you to normal programming...
