This arrow does not effect Beethro's movement at all, but it does change the direction of his sword immediately (as he finishes the move). With possible magnetic abilities, this can be used for selective sword placement by hold creators, and strategizing on where to move. It would be a blessing and a curse at various times (when running away from a monster, or when trying to hold off a column of three, for examples.) Comments? Discussion?

I think this might quite possibly be the one selection that would open up the most possibilities for new puzzles! I like it! Right now there is absolutely no way to restrict anything to do with Beethro's sword (other than it takes one move to swing 1 adjacent square)...great suggestion!

Question - if I'm on such an arrow, and turn my sword, will it immediately turn back?

Hmm...I would go with yes. I can't come up with a really good explanation why, but that's my gut feeling on this.

Maybe the electromagnetic force or whatever force it is that force arrows exert on you is so strong that Beethro cannot actually get his sword to turn, even if he tries - he just wastes a move.

There's a big difference between the two options - one means that if he stands on an arrow and there's a roach next to his sword, he might be able to kill it though the sword orientation won't change. The other means that fighting monsters while remaining on the sword arrow is totally impossible.

I like the second idea better because it allows for much nastier placements of sword arrows because Beethro will be unable to fight back, and so has to run until he finds a spot where he has time to turn and fend off the hordes of offending monsters.

:D

OOH! I like that better. I think that's what I was going for originally. I suppose if you tried to turn the sword, you would get the "bumping a wall" noise, or something to that effect. Yes. Definitely the "no-move sword spot".

What about arrows that automatically turns the sword left or right ? Let's say you're on a right-turning sword-arrow.. Pressing 5 would turn the sword right, turning the sword left would do nothing (but waste a turn), and turning the sword right would behave normally (two right-turns could also be an option, but i don't know how i feel about two-moves-in-a-row behaviour..)

There could also be a variant that simply blocks turning the sword one or both ways, but doesn't change the sword position when entering.

I think I like the original suggestion better - it allows you to control the player's sword more easily and design puzzles where the player has to deal with a pre-arranged sword angle. The arrow that turns the sword in a specific direction could be used in puzzles where there are enemies coming from specific directions, but no where else, really.

Sure, i like that too. What i suggested was a variant of that, not a replacement.
