I can mute it with the check box, but not change the volume level. I can move the slider for the sound effects, but the sound level is always loud.

The voice and music volumes change fine when the sliders are moved.

Also, when watching a demo and navigating to another application or folder window, the music and voices mute (as they should), but the sound effects can still be heard, even though the jtrh window is not active.

I am running windows Xp, with SoundMax Intergrated Digital Audio sound card.

I think you got a bum version of the 2.0.8 patch (a few people got it when it was first released, and then this problem was fixed). If you download the 2.0.8 patch again, the sound should work correctly for you.
