This may be a quirk rather than a bug, but...

When tar grows, all mothers not part of a pool are treated as a single tile pool and try to grow in all directions.

This includes putting tar under the mother if it isn't already there, even if the mother is on a tile that would normally block tar growth (wall, orthosquare). And even if the mother can't see the player (but another eye can).

So if you want a room where the player toggles black gates more than twice (without scripting), you need to use gel mothers.

This has been known for some time and used in puzzles. It would be pretty significant to change.

There is also a way to remove tarstuff under mothers as a consequence of some other quirks, this is used in a room in the Arky's Revenge contest compilation.
