This room is kicking my butt. I have tried everything but I think I'm missing the entire point.

First of all, I have to get something on the central pressure plate so that I can reach the conquer token. In order for that to happen, a monster has to be on one of the NE arrows. Because of the location of the on/off pp at 28,4 I'm pretty convinced that it has to be the roach that goes onto that arrow, as it seems impossible to release a golem from the central arrow section otherwise. I can get a roach there by blocking off the arrowed exit at 24,9 with the golem from the horizontal chamber. But then I can't get the 2nd golem into position.

Sigh. I've tried a lot of other things too but no success. Looking for a pretty broad hint I think.

Putting a golem on 24,9 means that you won't be able to get it out. Did you mean 24,11?

Oops, yes I did mean 24,11. And I have been doing as you hinted above but without success. However, knowing that this is the correct "direction" I will continue my attempts for a while before slinking back here in desperation.
