I'm willing to translate the game(s), and I'll start working on that soon, but first I need to know if I could also translate the texts proper to each hold.
Without these a translation would be somewhat pointless.

So, what format are those stored in ?

I'm not familiar with the process myself, but this link should be of help. It refers to DROD 3.0, but I don't expect much has changed in this department.

I believe I speak on behalf of the community when I say that your efforts will be much-appreciated!

I'll start working on the game's translation, I'll see about holds later, then.

Howdy.

This is the first set of questions I'll ask for the first revision of the translation. I'll of course try to answer them myself by exploring the game, but some things I just can't place :

v Where do these come from ? v

All of those are part of the editing stuff. The first, I believe, is to set demos to be exported with the hold and shown on the title screen.

For DemosMessages.uni texts, go to the Demos Screen by pressing F6 while in-game. You must have some demos previously saved for the room in order to see this text next to the currently highlighted demo.

For the editor messages, the texts in parenthesis show up at the top line of the screen while editing those particular object types. The other texts are shown as tool tips, if you let your mouse hover stationary while in those particular modes.

The persistent movement token is this: citizens calculate a path from one pylon to the next. Usually, if this path becomes blocked for a certain period of time, they'll choose a different path/target. The persistent movement token makes sure they will never do this.

I don't have that in my version. Is it only available in GatEB ?

I know that, I got all the other segments in that file, but I didn't see these specific ones anywhere.
Although I have since my last post seen the "Click or rotate to open/close door" one by activating the "group menu items" setting.

I should have made it clearer before, but when I'm asking for specific messages it means I really can't find them in-game, so I need a precise walkthrough on how to get them.

As for progress, I must be at 30% now.

Edit : oh and thanks, Someone Else !

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and speculate that you'll only get those options for holds that you have built yourself, or that are "anyone can edit"...

Just a side-note (and I much appreciate your effort in translating DROD in-game):
* Development will be needed so players can select their language
* Voice acting will still be in English - should they be turned off if a separate language is selected?
* Are you looking to translate all text in all holds?
* Going forwards, will you be available to translate text in new holds?

I may sounds harsh here, but as I said, I certainly respect your time on this. Having been through a translation phase of our core product in my work, I know those points have been stumbling blocks throughout.

It would be indeed nice to have an install option where you can choose the language right away, but I think I remember there is a way to change it later. Although it's quite cumbersome and involves copying some files in obscure folders and the like. So that definitely could be improved, I guess.

Absolutely not. It's just like watching a foreign film with subtitles. It's all good.

Syntax wrote:

The main ones at least. My wish is to translate at least GatEB, if that's possible, as it's the most recent one.

Syntax wrote:

Probably, yes. I can't really say how busy I'll be in the near future, but I'll try to do as much as I can.

As much as is possible I did undertake this task knowing fully well what it entails, but you're right to ask such questions.

Appreciate your response!

Translating all the voice acting to subtitles is a huge project though, no? I'm happy to help in any way I can if you decide to go for that though.

Random anecdote about subtitles:
I'm from near Toulouse (Foix) and I was au college when La Haine came out. I consider that a masterpiece and have shown it to many people over in England, but always with subtitles.

One time a friend (in London) was over and I put the film on. This time though I only had the non subtitled version. He watched the whole thing (not knowing a word of French) and understood the entirety.

In this particualar case, cinematography provided all the translation needed. But to do that with text is an artform.

Ha, I'm from near Toulouse as well ! Dans le Gers, plus précisément.

As for translating intentions in speech, I think text on its own is enough. You can always tell by the sound of it if a character is angry, apologetic, or whatever.
And as for your help, I'll always appreciate it in proofreading. Maybe more if that goes well, I don't know.

Hi. I loathe hijacking topics as much as I hate creating useless topics for a topic that's already under debate so... Mmh... Errr... Yeah. Whatever.

It's a very specific question I'd like to ask. Say there's this guy who is a grammar and spelling nazi, has two kids and has been translating stuff for twenty years just for fun, has had his share of fun with rom translations, and has translated mods and indie games for six years (they say stories need background, there you go :3).

Say his kids are driving him mad with "Dad, WHAT IS THIS GAME?" every time he tries to concentrate on a puzzle involving a good bit of efficiency. Tip: never play DROD if kids are around.

Say this guy wants GatEB and Smitemastery 101 translated (into French, hence the semi-hijack that's still totally related) NOW. Just to keep his last bits of sanity. And to top it off, say this guy has seen so many things in the aforementioned 6-year timespan he won't trust anyone to do the job for him unless he gets a GOOD feel for the translator's work. And he usually ends up VERY unsatisfied with what he sees.

To the point then: I want to do that, even if for my kids only. Metakitextract doesn't seem to do the job (or I've been doing reaaaally stupid things with it). The holds can't be exported as they are official ones. All I want is in-game dialogs and scrolls and credits and stuff to be translated. I've read the topics listed in this very thread, but I don't even.

So I have two questions:

1. How is one to extract it all (on Linux, just because yeah, it would be too easy on Windows, wouldn't it) if it's even possible? Would metakitextract do the trick and if so, what are the next steps? (I love to tinker, but I think I'm missing a bit of info here, and I don't have as much time as I would like to right now. :/)

2. How is one to use said translation in game?

We've built some easy localization support into the DROD 3.x+ engines. No need to use MetaKitExtract to do this, but you do need export permission for a hold. Are you willing to help out make your translation available for all? If so, I'd like to work with you on that. Please PM me your e-mail address, and I can send you a text template, exported from each of these holds. All you would need to do is supply an alternate line for each English text, and then send it back to me. I can rebuild the .hold file and provide it in the next official release, so that whenever a player chooses that language, they will see your texts everywhere in the game. You can also personally import the language files you create in order to have them in your local installation immediately.

OK, if I may be able to chime in before anyone else steals my thunder...

I'm more than 90% done with the engine's translation. I still have questions that need answering, plus those that I didn't get answers for previously and that are still sitting in this thread.
Once someone tells me where and how I can get these messages displayed in-game, the translation will be done, after one last proofreading and testing:

Thanks for the answers. The "item" bit was lost during a careless cut/paste, my bad. Here it is again:

quote:
[MID_OrderAtCaravelGames]

This item isn't available for download. Check CaravelGames.com for purchasing information.

[This is referring to a media item on the Mod screen, in case items (e.g. a music bundle) are made available for purchase, then can be downloaded into the game.]

For all the other strings where I am not asking anything, I need to know where in the game can you see that specific string, like "Saved game broken:". That's what I need to know for my previous post, plus the following:
quote:

in EditScreens.uni

[MID_GetRoomSquare]

[Shows up when selecting a room square in the room editor on the room location scroll. Shows, for instance, when pressing F9 to reassign the top-left tile of a custom floor image.]

[MID_GetRoomSquareTip]

[In the above scenario, displays as a tool tip when hovering the mouse motionless over the room.]

[MID_GetRoomRect]
[eng]
(Selecting Room Area)

[MID_GetRoomRectTip]
[eng]
Click and drag the mouse to select an area of the room.

[the above two are similar, when selecting a room rectangular area. Happens when defining the area of effect for an NPC script command]
