Apparently I need more of a hint. The vertical symmetry means that anything I do to approach in one direction endangers me from behind. I haven't yet found a way around this.

Thank you! None of those three ideas was new to me, but the combination must have triggered something, because on my next try, I was able to solve the room. The biggest thing that worked for me this time was

My problem at the moment is how to get back to this room, not how to complete it. I can't restore to it because the blue door is no longer dropped, and I can't return from the NE. This is my last secret room. What have I missed?
