Well, I use Goldwave for most of my audio editing; it should be able to handle .mp3 -> wav conversion easily. If you want to go from .wav -> .mp3, you may need the LAME plug-in (instructions for installing it here, in the "Optional Downloads" section.

As for .mp3 -> .ogg, (or .wav -> .ogg), I don't know which encoder is best, but I use oggdropXPd.

By the way, you might want to read A friendly note from your HAs, especially the part about "copyrighted images, or sounds."

I downloaded it from a website and said exactly this:

BY DOWNLOADING THE FOLLOWING SONG YOU AGREE THAT YOU LEGALLY OWN IT, AND THEREBY ACCEPT ALL LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY BY DOWNLOADING IT. IF YOU IN FACT DO NOT OWN IT, YOU ALSO AGREE THAT THE WEBMASTER IS NOT LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ILLEGAL ACTIONS AND THAT YOU ARE DOWNLOADING AT YOUR OWN RISK.

So I'm the "legal" owner.

As in "Only download this if you actually own the CD" (which is highly legally questionable in it's own right...) - but then why bother with downloading instead of just ripping the CD?

(If this were the doom9.org forum this thread would've been closed for a rule 6 violation right about now...)

In addition, all of this only refers to your right to listen to (and presumably store) the music.

I doubt you can include it in your hold at all because you do not have the permission to do so (even if it were ripped from a CD you own), so please don't do it. If you really want to use custom music in your hold, you could try looking around for some freely released music; for example, there is some here on this forum (make sure to ask for Didouneto's permission first, though).

I've been quite successful in converting things with Audacity. You can convert mp3's to wav's using this program.

I agree. Audacity is a great program that can really do loads of stuff, and one of the best parts is that it's free. I know nothing about sound mixing, but still managed to use it to edit together some songs for two friends' dance routine.

I recommend SUPER. It is a free audio and video encoder/decoder that can handle probably every conceivable format.
The only slightly larger problem you can encounter is that the download link is quite well hidden (they even have a download help page for that). Windows only.

Am I the only one scared by the fact that anyone would even need that page due to the hideous web design? :|
