Hawk, I think you would be the worst culprit of this. In your eagerness to extend the story (From about the last 7-8 pages, you have posted just under half the replies here, your words coming once every two posts), you are posting random words all over the place and turning this story into a random word list. Please stop ignoring requests to put some thought into your choice of words, and try harder to make sure what you write makes sense.

I know this is not a random word list, and so far all the words I have posted *are* gramatically correct - or could have been, anyways - "evil good" was a mistype where I meant to write "goods", and when I had come back someone had already posted "and". Therefore, I used sort-of-OK. Evil, good, and sort-of-OK is a figure of speech from "Muddle Earth" and not meant to be a combination of three words.

Well, this definitely falls under the definition of "stylistically tortured", and is part of what people are complaining about - but if you insist, lets go with it.

Oh, and by the way - I'm a linguist. This sort of thing is part of my job. And "Beneath the clouds were ..." is not the same at all as "through the hoop jumped the cat". It's also not the same as "Beneath the bridge were the trolls". The cat example involves a verb of motion, which has a different argument structure than be. The latter is a generic use of were, which is inappropriate with clouds, because clouds move. It would be ok if the clouds were permanently in the same place - and I admit I didn't think of that possibility - but it's a long shot.

"Beneath the clouds were..." is most certainly gramatically correct. It is one of the rare sentences where the predicate goes before the subject - such as "Through the hoop jumped the black cat." Ask almost any English teacher.
