The aim of Progression is to, err, progress from one word to another, gradually, post by post. The first poster (me) chooses a start point and end point and the forumers have to fill in the gap by gradually working from one to another.

For instance, if the start point were Small and the end point were large, to progression could go something like:

Post 1: String
Post 2: Electron
Post 3: Quark
Post 4: Atom
Post 5: Molecule
etc.

When the end objective has been reached, the person who made the post that reached it chooses the next progression.

So, let's start with classical music to punk rock.

Yeah, I considered posting Brahms or Dvorak, but from what I read it seems Beethoven is often considered transitional between Classical and Romantic, so I jumped forward. (*backing away* ...but I'm not looking to start a music debate. Oooh... though a musical debate might be entertaining.)

However, the next "entry" jumps almost 100 years, quite a few genres and moves from composers/musicians to album titles. The train is off the tracks.

I hadn't really researched any of this musical stuff...I'd simply seen the group Yes mentioned and an album title referring to oceans, so I had made that last leap. I guess I would defer to hartleyhair for a definitive ruling. :)

Yeah, I was probably at fault there. We can regress back to Duke Ellington if you guys like.

"At fault", not really ... I expect the arguing is a feature that arises naturally from the game's (lack of) rules. We're meant to go in "gradual" steps (redundant, I know), but there's no in-game way to determine whether any step is gradual enough, and no rule on what to do if a step is too much of a leap.

I've tried sandbox games before, one a complete failure that cost me almost as many mod points as getting in the Bureaucracy and one that was incredibly successful. The key is simply to run with what the last poster said.

I was going to politely ask for some additional clarification of the rules (specifically with regards to how quickly we should progress from one word to the next) before the game had even begun, but I chose not to because I hadn't wanted to irritate anyone. Silly me. :look

Oh...I had thought that "Rock Lobster" was the end of the line, so to speak, as the B52's have (at least initially) been considered a punk rock band.

. . . so could we progress backwards? (regressing perhaps) thereby filling in the gaps as it were. :cool
