Daleks are those cone-ish robots in Dr. Who.

Of course in DROD robots are pretty silly, so instead they could be, I dunno, red roaches or something.

Daleks head toward Beethro like roaches and are immune to all traditional ways of killing(mimics, swords).

The only way to kill a Dalek is to run it into a Dalek Pile or another Dalek. When two Daleks collide they produce a Pile, and when a Dalek hits a pile it dies.

Dalek Piles are like regular walls, except they can kill Daleks.

Has this been suggested before?

I doubt it's been suggested before. I think this needs a name change, and I think Beethro should be able to walk over the piles. Apart from that, I'm all for it.

Ok... what would you suggest calling them?

And part of the whole idea is to not be able to walk over the piles. Making the piles non-solid cuts the potential for puzzles nearly by half. What would the benefit of having non-solid piles be?

There would need to be a mandate that there can not be one Dalek in a room. More is fine.

This could be interesting...but I can't see this working. If the sword can't hold them back, it becomes pretty tough to move them around the room.

That's up to the architect to work around. If an architect abuses the Daleks then no one will play that hold.

And if they're brained, it wouldn't be much of a problem to avoid them as they're actually at a DISadvantage.

The mandate might not be what's needed. After all, they'd still be vulnerable to bombs and The Flow and any other creative means for destruction that'll be in future versions. All it would need is a warning, like with mothers off tar.

I don't know what to call them, but I doubt we'd get a monster called a "dalek" in the final release. And as for the piles - I don't know, maybe I wasn't thinking. I had the idea that it would somehow interfere with things. Either way would probably be fine.

How about the sword can block them but not kill them? Does the pile count as a monster? After a "dalek" hits a pile, is the pile gone?

Obviously, you've never played "daleks". Why would the sword block them? How would it be coded? I'm thinking they would stay in the snake layer, so the sword doesn't affect them. No, when they hit a pile it doesn't disappear. It's permanent.

The sword should block them because otherwise it would eliminate a lot of puzzle potential because it's a lot harder to create piles.

And I think piles should be non-permanent. It could get very interesting with a passage continually opening and closing.

So... piles last until the next spawn cycle?

This opens up new puzzles, not the least of which would be "Get the dalek to the pile before it disappears". Ok, that's good.

And the sword thing? Ok, the sword blocks Daleks. The original mechanincs(random teleportation) won't work with DROD, since, well, it's RANDOM. Which isn't cool.

So yeah, sword stops Daleks cold.

So, if you swing your sword onto a Dalek, does it freeze? That would be cool.

No, the sword simply blocks them. If you move your sword into them they just ignore it; they can't enter the square with the sword by themselves though.

Matt: The freezing or the destruction of other daleks?

It really changes the original idea. Besides, what's the application of freezing that doesn't work with blocking? I know there's one but it's possible to work around it.

I was thinking about using mimics, mostly. It could be something where "Beethro has to face sideways to kill roaches while mimic prevents dalek from going into force arrows."

Maybe we could have a potion which puts a big rock on Beethro's sword for 30 turns during which his sword is an obstacle to everything, including serpents.

That's weapons-changing. That wouldn't be cool... I don't think so anyway. What'd be the point, really? I mean, the strength of serpents is that they ignore your sword. Take away that and I think you've removed what makes serpenst challenging. Unless there's a downside like not being able to kill critters, instead just stunning them?

Sort of like Excalibur in Castlevania? I always thought it was funny, braining enemies with a rock-on-a-sword-stick.

To tell the truth I was trying to remember. It was a GBA one; and once you beat it you got excalibur.

I think it's the one where you're half vampire... the one with soul captures... and that plot twist....

What if the "pile" behaved just like a crumbly wall? Best of both worlds there, as you can use your sword to destroy the pile once it was created, or leave it for blocking/protection purposes.

No, because the "best" is good for the player, not nessesarily good for the hold. If the puzzle is to try to keep a certain passage unblocked then there should be some challenge to that. Piles are copable.

I think the "disappearing piles" thing works. It serves the function of blocking temporarily, and killing daleks, while adding a certain element of "forcing" to the scheme.

Maybe Beethro could sweep the pile of debris away with his sword! Beethro the Maid.

Some brainstorming for replacements for the Dalek sprite (still maintaining whatever logic you're coming up with)

Landmine Turtle (explodes if it touches another land turtle)
Unstable Spore (Like Gas Spores in D&D)
Golem (collapses in a pile of dirt)
