icon Multi-Square Trapdoors (0)
These are trapdoors that take up more than one square. They can be any size or shape. A multi-square trapdoor is deemed "activated" when there is a heavy object on each of its squares (Beethro, mimics, tar, monsters except wraithwings, etc, but not potions, scrolls or Beethro's sword). An activated trapdoor will fall when anything steps off it, whether it be Beethro, mimic or monster. When it falls, anything remaining on it falls down with it and is destroyed. If one or more middle segments of a snake fall, then any rear segments isolated from the head as a result are destroyed as well. With respect to red doors, it has the same status as a normal trapdoor.
Variant idea (simpler but IMO not as good): the trapdoor falls when Beethro walks off it, regardless of what else is occupying it.

I think this could be a good idea, but also quite ponderous if the architect makes one too big. How about when *anything* heavy enough steps on any one of its squares then leaves?

How would one tell if the trapdoor was one piece?

Maybe it should look like solid shiny red, but with rounded corners...

I think that this ought to be modified so that it only takes one thing to step on it, and make the only "heavy" things Beethro and mimics and possible future trapdoor openers. Otherwise you're changing the system to fit the request, not the request for the system.

I don't really see the point of this entirely...it could actually take away from trapdoor mazes and the such...and doesn't really give too much more of a benefit for that.

This would be more of a trap than anything else IMO... would brains keep monsters away from these?

But this would be an entirely different thing from normal trapdoors... it could be the only way to kill a snake, for instance. (And note I'm standing by my first request; all squares of the trapdoor must be occupied.)

How about perhaps only half? It could get very tedious otherwise.

Not if the trapdoors were fairly small (I think that mainly 2 or 3 square ones would be used). But half's OK, except that it would require a bit of counting.

Would you choose rounding up or down?

I'd say up, so you need 2 objects to drop a 3-square trapdoor.
This half business raises the question: Would movement within an activated trapdoor drop it?

Hm.... no. Trapdoors drop when you step OFF them.

At least that's how I see it. Otherwise waiting on a trapdoor would mean death.

well, probably not.

There may be magic and mimics but I'm pretty sure this is medievel level technology. And they didn't quite have motion sensors that could survive in a dungeon without food. However, they are good with pulleys, springs, hooks, and intricate bits of stone and metal. Hence, the idea that it's the "step on step off" is quite logical.

.....I see...

Anyway, would Wraithwings count as occupying one of these, even though they fly? Would this activate before or after monster movement? And would brains direct monsters away from it?

I believe he said no(they DO fly). I think this would activate BEFORE monster movement(it would move right after Beethro). And I'm curious as to how brains would see it.

When you say "activate", do you mean activate (i.e. prepare to drop) or actually drop? The game checks whether there's enough weight on the trapdoor at the end of each turn. If you're talking about dropping, it's right after the turn of whichever object moves off the trapdoor.
I think brains would ignore them, although I'm open to suggestion on this.

Yeah, but they ARE dangers to the monsters... although I suppose since they don't make roaches avoid Beethro's sword we CAN question how much brains value their controlled underlings...

Meh... they make it avoid it like an obstacle, not as a threat. Otherwise it'd try to stay out of threat range, like a goblin. Yes, I know that would be bad. No, I'm not suggesting it. But I'm just saying since it doesn't work that way I don't think brains should avoid threats per se, just obstacles.
